The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen (1) for the unbelievers, which none may avert, (2) From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. (3) On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. (4) But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. (5) They deem it to be remote. (6) but We see it near. (7) The day the sky becomes like molten brass, (8) and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, (9) And friend shall not ask of friend (10) (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, (11) His wife and his brother, (12) His kindred who sheltered him, (13) And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. (14) But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell (15) That would skin the scalp. (16) It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. (17) and amassed (riches) and hoarded. (18) ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: (19) Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; (20) If good comes to him he holds back his hand, (21) Save worshippers. (22) Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; (23) and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] (24) For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. (25) And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. (26) And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - (27) for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; (28) And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). (29) Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - (30) But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - (31) And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. (32) And those who are in their testimonies upright (33) And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- (34) Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss). (35)
