The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall (1) The infidels, of which there is no averter. (2) From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. (3) To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore endure with a goodly patience. (5) Surely they think it to be far off, (6) but We see it near at hand. (7) On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. (8) And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, (9) And not a friend shall ask a friend, (10) Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. (11) His wife and his brother, (12) His kindred who sheltered him, (13) and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. (14) But no! There is a raging blaze (15) stripping away his skin, (16) It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] (17) And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. (18) ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament (19) When evil touches him, impatient, (20) And when good touches him, withholding [of it], (21) But not so the worshippers (22) Those who are regular in their prayers. (23) And those in whose riches is a known right. (24) For the beggar and the destitute; (25) And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, (26) And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- (27) Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, (28) And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). (29) except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- (30) (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), (31) And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies. (33) And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. (34) Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss). (35)
