The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come (1) The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- (2) (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. (3) To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. (4) So be thou patient with a sweet patience; (5) Surely they think it to be far off, (6) While we behold it nigh: (7) On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. (8) and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, (9) even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, (10) though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, (11) his wife, his brother, (12) And his family who had stood by him, (13) and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. (14) By no means! It will be the fierce flame (15) A fire that melts the hide. (16) It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, (17) And collected [wealth] and hoarded. (18) ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. (19) When evil comes upon him he is impatient; (20) and whenever good fortune comes to him, he selfishly withholds it [from others]. (21) save those that pray (22) Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; (23) They are those who assign a certain share of their property (24) For the beggar and the destitute. (25) And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. (26) And those who fear the torment of their Lord, (27) for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; (28) And those who of their private parts are guards. (29) Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; (30) But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. (31) and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: (32) And those who stand by their testimony (33) And those who keep a guard on their prayer, (34) Those shall be in gardens, honored.
