The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall (1) (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; (2) from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, (3) (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. (5) behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away (6) but We see it near at hand. (7) The day when the sky will be like molten silver. (8) and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, (9) And no friend will ask after a friend, (10) though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, (11) And his spouse and his brother (12) and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, (13) And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. (14) But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, (15) that will strip off the scalp. (16) Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). (17) And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. (18) ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. (19) when evil visits him, impatient, (20) And niggardly when good befalls him (21) Except the observers of prayer - (22) Those who are constant in their prayer (23) those who give a due share of their wealth (24) For the petitioner and the deprived - (25) And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, (26) and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement (27) Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, (28) And those who of their private parts are guards. (29) Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy (30) but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; (31) and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies; (33) And those who are attentive at their worship. (34) Those are highly honored in the Gardens. (35)
