The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), (1) (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; (2) (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. (3) To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) So be thou patient with a sweet patience; (5) Verily they behold it afar off. (6) But We see it [as] near. (7) Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper (8) and the mountains become like wool, (9) And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend (10) though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, (11) And his wife and his brother, (12) the kinsmen who gave him shelter, (13) and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. (14) By no means! It will be the fierce flame (15) stripping away his skin, (16) It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] (17) And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. (18) ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- (19) Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him (20) when good visits him, grudging, (21) Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. (22) and are constant in their Prayer; (23) In whose wealth a due share is included (24) For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) (25) and those who believe in the Day of Judgement (26) and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord (27) Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, (28) and guard their private parts (29) Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy (30) But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- (31) And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. (32) and those who are upright in their testimonies; (33) and who take due care of their Prayer: (34) They will live in gardens with honour. (35)
