The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A requester seeks the punishment that will take place (1) Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, (2) From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. (3) To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. (5) Indeed, they see it [as] distant, (6) And We behold it nigh. (7) On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. (8) and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, (9) And friend shall not ask of friend (10) Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. (11) And his spouse and his brother. (12) the kinsmen who gave him shelter, (13) And all those who are in the earth then only if the redemption saves him! (14) But no! There is a raging blaze (15) Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! (16) Calling: "[O Kafir (O disbeliever in Allah, His angels, His Book, His Messengers, Day of Resurrection and in Al-Qadar (Divine Preordainments), O Mushrik (O polytheist, disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah)] (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from Faith) [picking and swallowing them up from that great gathering of mankind (on the Day of Resurrection) just as a bird picks up a food-grain from the earth with its beak and swallows it up] [Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 18, Page 289] (17) and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. (18) ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: (19) When evil touches him, impatient, (20) And niggardly when good befalls him (21) Not so those devoted to Prayer;- (22) Those who are constant in their prayer (23) And those within whose wealth is a known right (24) For the needy and those dispossessed, (25) And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, (26) And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - (27) surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from (28) those who preserve their chastity (29) Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, (30) but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; (31) who honor their trust and promises, (32) and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; (33) and (finally) those who do not miss their ritual - prayers at the prescribed times; (34) They will live in gardens with honour.
