The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). 5 they see it as being far off; 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 On that Day the heaven shall become like molten copper, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 tearing away his skin! 16 It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. 21 save those that pray 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 who guard their privates 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss). 35
