The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), (1) The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- (2) From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. (3) To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) So persevere with becoming patience. (5) behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away (6) but, We see it as near! (7) The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, (8) and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, (9) and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends (10) though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, (11) And his spouse and his brother. (12) And his kindred who sheltered him, (13) and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. (14) By no means! For the raging flames of the fire (15) stripping away his skin, (16) It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] (17) And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. (18) ۞ Verily man is impatient by nature: (19) Very nervous when touched by misfortune. (20) If good comes to him he holds back his hand, (21) except those who are steadfast (22) Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); (23) And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged (24) for the needy and the deprived, (25) And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; (26) and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord (27) Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - (28) And those who guard their chastity, (29) except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. (30) whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; (31) and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies; (33) and who are constant in their prayers. (34) Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. (35)
