The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. (1) The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- (2) from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, (3) by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. (4) Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. (5) Indeed, they see it [as] distant, (6) Whereas We see it impending. (7) It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like unto dregs of oil. (8) And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool (9) And no friend will ask concerning his friend. (10) though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, (11) His wife and his brother, (12) His kindred who sheltered him, (13) and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. (14) By no means! Verily it is a Flame. (15) Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! (16) and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), (17) and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. (18) ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament (19) When they are afflicted, they complain, (20) If good comes to him he holds back his hand, (21) Except the observers of prayer - (22) Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); (23) They are those who assign a certain share of their property (24) For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) (25) who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, (26) And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- (27) Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! (28) who guard their privates (29) Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, (30) But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; (31) And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive (32) And those who are firm upon their testimonies. (33) And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: (34) These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. (35)
