The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall (1) for the unbelievers, which none may avert, (2) From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. (3) To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. (4) So be thou patient with a sweet patience; (5) Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, (6) But We see it (quite) near. (7) The day when the sky will become as molten copper, (8) And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool (9) And friend shall not ask of friend (10) Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, (11) And his wife and his brother (12) And his family who had stood by him, (13) And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. (14) By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire (15) Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- (16) and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back (17) And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. (18) ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. (19) when evil visits him, impatient, (20) but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly (21) Except those who pray, (22) Those who are constant in their prayer (23) And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. (24) For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); (25) those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, (26) And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment (27) (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) (28) and who are mindful of their chastity, (29) Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; (30) But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; (31) And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. (32) And those who are in their testimonies upright (33) And those who keep a guard on their prayer, (34) Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. (35)
