The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen (1) for the unbelievers, which none may avert, (2) From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), (3) all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… (4) Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. (5) behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away (6) While we behold it nigh: (7) It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like unto dregs of oil. (8) And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. (9) no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, (10) They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. (11) And his spouse and his brother. (12) And his kin that sheltered him. (13) and all those on earth. (14) By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire (15) It snatches away by the scalps, (16) It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. (17) And masseth and then hoardeth. (18) ۞ Surely man was created fretful, (19) Fretful when evil befalleth him (20) And niggardly when good touches him; (21) But not so the worshippers (22) Who are constant at their worship (23) And those within whose wealth is a known right (24) For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); (25) And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, (26) and fear the chastisement of their Lord (27) For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- (28) who guard their privates (29) Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, (30) But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- (31) And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. (32) and perform their witnessings, (33) and (finally) those who do not miss their ritual - prayers at the prescribed times; (34) These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! (35)
