The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall (1) those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, (2) From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), (3) by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. (4) But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. (5) They deem it to be remote. (6) but, We see it as near! (7) [It will take place] on a Day when the sky will be like molten lead, (8) And the mountains will be like wool, (9) and no friend will ask about his friend, (10) Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. (11) And his wife and his brother, (12) And his family who had stood by him, (13) And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. (14) But no! There is a raging blaze (15) snatching away the scalp, (16) Calling: "[O Kafir (O disbeliever in Allah, His angels, His Book, His Messengers, Day of Resurrection and in Al-Qadar (Divine Preordainments), O Mushrik (O polytheist, disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah)] (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from Faith) [picking and swallowing them up from that great gathering of mankind (on the Day of Resurrection) just as a bird picks up a food-grain from the earth with its beak and swallows it up] [Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 18, Page 289] (17) and amassed wealth and hoarded it. (18) ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. (19) When evil touches him, impatient, (20) but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly (21) Save worshippers. (22) Who are at their prayer constant. (23) And those within whose wealth is a known right (24) For the petitioner and the deprived - (25) And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, (26) And those who fear the torment of their Lord, (27) the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, (28) and who are mindful of their chastity, (29) Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. (30) But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. (31) and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, (32) Who uphold their testimonies, (33) and who are constant in their prayers. (34) such people will receive due honor in Paradise. (35)
