The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall (1) The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- (2) From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways (3) To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). (5) Surely they think it to be far off, (6) but We see it near. (7) The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, (8) And the mountains will be like wool, (9) and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, (10) (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, (11) His wife and his brother, (12) And his nearest kindred who shelter him (13) And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. (14) By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! (15) stripping away his skin, (16) It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. (17) who amassed and hoarded. (18) ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament (19) Fretful when evil touches him; (20) but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly (21) Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), (22) Who are constant at their worship (23) And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. (24) For the petitioner and the deprived - (25) And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, (26) And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- (27) Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. (28) And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). (29) except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, (30) but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, (31) And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant (32) and perform their witnessings, (33) And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: (34) such people will receive due honor in Paradise.
