The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, (1) (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; (2) From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. (3) To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. (5) behold, they see it as if far off; (6) but We see it to be very near. (7) On that Day the heaven shall become like molten copper, (8) and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, (9) and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, (10) although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, (11) And his spouse and his brother. (12) And his kindred who sheltered him, (13) and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. (14) But no! There is a raging blaze (15) Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- (16) and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), (17) and amassed (riches) and hoarded. (18) ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, (19) Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; (20) when good visits him, grudging, (21) except those that pray, (22) Who are constant at their worship (23) And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. (24) For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) (25) And those who believe in the Day of Recompense (26) And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment (27) the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, (28) And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). (29) Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, (30) But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. (31) who honor their trust and promises, (32) and standby their witnessing, (33) And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. (34) Those are highly honored in the Gardens. (35)
