The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, (1) The infidels, of which there is no averter. (2) From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. (3) The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, (4) (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. (5) They surely take it to be far away, (6) And We see it nigh. (7) On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, (8) And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool (9) And no friend inquires after friend (10) Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children (11) his companion (wife), his brother, (12) And his family who had stood by him, (13) And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: (14) By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! (15) Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- (16) It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, (17) And masseth and then hoardeth. (18) ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament (19) When evil touches him, impatient, (20) but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly (21) Not so are the prayerful. (22) and are constant in their Prayer; (23) And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, (24) for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, (25) And those who believe in the Day of Recompense (26) and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement (27) surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from (28) And those who guard their private parts, (29) save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy (30) So those who desire more than this it is they who are the transgressors. (31) And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies; (33) And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: (34) It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. (35)
