The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen (1) Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- (2) from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, (3) The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, (4) So be patient with gracious patience. (5) Indeed, they see it [as] distant, (6) But We see it (quite) near. (7) The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, (8) The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, (9) And no friend inquires after friend (10) although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, (11) his wife, his brother, (12) And his nearest kindred who shelter him (13) and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. (14) But never. It is pure white flame (15) Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! (16) It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. (17) And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! (18) ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. (19) If evil befalls him he is perturbed; (20) And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. (21) save those that pray (22) and constant in their prayers. (23) And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, (24) For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. (25) And those who believe in the Day of Recompense (26) And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- (27) surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from (28) who guard their privates (29) except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- (30) But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. (31) And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies; (33) And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. (34) such people will receive due honor in Paradise. (35)
