The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- (1) The infidels, of which there is no averter. (2) No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. (3) To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. (5) Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, (6) But We see it (quite) near. (7) It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, (8) The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, (9) And no friend inquires after friend (10) although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, (11) his wife, his brother, (12) and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, (13) And all those that are in the earth, (wishing) then (that) this might deliver him. (14) But never. It is pure white flame (15) That would skin the scalp. (16) calling him who drew back and turned away, (17) And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. (18) ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; (19) Very nervous when touched by misfortune. (20) And refraining, when good reaches him. (21) except those who are steadfast (22) Those who are constant in their prayer (23) those in whose wealth is a right known (24) For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); (25) who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, (26) and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, (27) Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, (28) And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old (29) except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, (30) (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), (31) And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, (32) And those who are in their testimonies upright (33) And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. (34) It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. (35)
