The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall (1) The infidels, of which there is no averter. (2) From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. (3) The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: (5) They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, (6) but, We see it as near! (7) On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. (8) and the mountains become like wool, (9) And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend (10) though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, (11) And his wife and his brother (12) And his kin that harboured him (13) and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. (14) But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, (15) A fire that melts the hide. (16) It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. (17) and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. (18) ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. (19) when evil visits him, impatient, (20) If good comes to him he holds back his hand, (21) Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), (22) Who are constant at their worship (23) those who give a due share of their wealth (24) For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); (25) and those who believe in the Day of Judgement (26) And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment (27) for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; (28) And those who guard their private parts (29) Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, (30) But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - (31) and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies. (33) And those who keep a guard on their prayer, (34) such people will receive due honor in Paradise. (35)
