The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall (1) The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- (2) from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, (3) On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. (4) Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). (5) They surely take it to be far away, (6) but We see it is nigh. (7) It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, (8) and the mountains become like wool, (9) no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, (10) They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children (11) and his spouse and his brother, (12) And his kindred who sheltered him, (13) And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. (14) By no means! Verily it is a Flame. (15) stripping away his skin, (16) It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] (17) Who amasses and then hoards. (18) ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. (19) When evil touches him, impatient, (20) And when good touches him, withholding [of it], (21) Not so those devoted to Prayer;- (22) Those who are constant at their prayer (23) And those in whose wealth there is a known right, (24) for the beggar and the outcast, (25) who confirm the Day of Doom (26) And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- (27) the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, (28) And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). (29) Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy (30) So those who desire more than this it is they who are the transgressors. (31) (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies; (33) And those who of their prayer are observant. (34) all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. (35)
