The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, (1) the unbelievers which none can prevent. (2) From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. (3) Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. (4) But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. (5) Lo! they behold it afar off (6) but We see it near. (7) Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper (8) And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, (9) And no friend inquires after friend (10) They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. (11) his companion (wife), his brother, (12) and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, (13) And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. (14) By no means! For the raging flames of the fire (15) snatching away the scalp, (16) It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, (17) and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. (18) ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: (19) When evil comes upon him he is impatient; (20) but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly (21) except those who are steadfast (22) Who are constant at their worship (23) who, from their wealth is a known right (24) For the needy and those dispossessed, (25) And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. (26) And those who fear the torment of their Lord, (27) Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- (28) and who are mindful of their chastity, (29) Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, (30) But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. (31) and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; (32) and standby their witnessing, (33) and who are constant in their prayers. (34) Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. (35)
