The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, (1) which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. (2) From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. (3) by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. (4) So be thou patient with a sweet patience; (5) They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): (6) But We see it very near. (7) The day the sky becomes like molten brass, (8) And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. (9) And no friend will ask concerning his friend. (10) Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children (11) His wife and his brother, (12) And the family in which he was. (13) and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. (14) By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! (15) Flaying off the scalp-skin. (16) and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back (17) And collected [wealth] and hoarded. (18) ۞ Human beings are created greedy. (19) Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; (20) And refraining, when good reaches him. (21) But not so the worshippers (22) and constant in their prayers. (23) And those in whose wealth there is a known right, (24) for the beggar and the outcast, (25) And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, (26) And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment (27) for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, (28) and who are mindful of their chastity, (29) except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, (30) whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; (31) And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies; (33) And those who protect their prayers. (34) Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. (35)
