The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 But We see it very near. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 And those who are in their testimonies upright 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
