The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall (1) The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- (2) No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. (3) The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: (4) But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. (5) Verily they behold it afar off. (6) Whereas We see it impending. (7) It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like unto dregs of oil. (8) And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool (9) and no friend will ask about his friend, (10) Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. (11) and of his spouse, and of his brother, (12) his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) (13) and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. (14) By no means! For the raging flames of the fire (15) Dragging by the head, (16) and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], (17) And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. (18) ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. (19) Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him (20) but when good comes upon him, he is grudging (21) Not so those devoted to Prayer;- (22) who are steadfast in prayer; (23) who, from their wealth is a known right (24) For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); (25) And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, (26) And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - (27) the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, (28) And those who guard their private parts (29) Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, (30) But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. (31) And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies; (33) And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. (34) They will live in gardens with honour. (35)
