The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall (1) (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; (2) No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. (3) The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. (4) So persevere with becoming patience. (5) Verily they behold it afar off. (6) but We see it near. (7) On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, (8) and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, (9) And not a friend shall ask a friend, (10) though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, (11) his wife, his brother, (12) and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, (13) And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. (14) By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire (15) that will strip off the scalp. (16) and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], (17) And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). (18) ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: (19) Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him (20) but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly (21) except those that pray, (22) Who are at their prayer constant. (23) And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged (24) For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. (25) who confirm the Day of Doom (26) And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - (27) Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! (28) And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). (29) except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- (30) So those who desire more than this it is they who are the transgressors. (31) and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; (32) and those who stand by their testimony (33) and who are constant in their prayers. (34) Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. (35)
