The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 stripping away his skin, 16 Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 But not so the worshippers 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
