The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. (1) To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. (2) From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways (3) To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) So be patient (O Muhammad SAW), with a good patience. (5) Indeed, they see it [as] distant, (6) but We see it to be very near. (7) The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, (8) And the hills become as flakes of wool, (9) And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend (10) Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children (11) and of his spouse, and of his brother, (12) His kindred who sheltered him, (13) and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. (14) By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire (15) will strip-off the flesh (16) Calling: "[O Kafir (O disbeliever in Allah, His angels, His Book, His Messengers, Day of Resurrection and in Al-Qadar (Divine Preordainments), O Mushrik (O polytheist, disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah)] (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from Faith) [picking and swallowing them up from that great gathering of mankind (on the Day of Resurrection) just as a bird picks up a food-grain from the earth with its beak and swallows it up] [Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 18, Page 289] (17) And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. (18) ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. (19) If evil befalls him he is perturbed; (20) but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly (21) except those that pray, (22) Those who are constant in their prayer (23) And those in whose riches is a known right. (24) For the needy and those dispossessed, (25) And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, (26) and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, (27) Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, (28) and those who guard their private parts, (29) Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; (30) whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; (31) And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive (32) And those who stand by their testimony (33) And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. (34) It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. (35)
