The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come (1) to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God (2) No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. (3) by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. (5) behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away (6) While we behold it nigh: (7) Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper (8) And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. (9) and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends (10) though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, (11) his wife, his brother, (12) And the family in which he was. (13) And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. (14) But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell (15) snatching away the scalp, (16) and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back (17) and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. (18) ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; (19) [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; (20) And when good touches him, withholding [of it], (21) Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), (22) Who persevere in devotion, (23) And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. (24) For the petitioner and the deprived - (25) who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, (26) And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - (27) Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- (28) And those who guard their private parts, (29) except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. (30) (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), (31) And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies. (33) And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. (34) such people will receive due honor in Paradise. (35)
