The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come (1) To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. (2) From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), (3) by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. (4) So persevere with becoming patience. (5) Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, (6) While we behold it nigh: (7) The day when the sky will become as molten copper, (8) and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, (9) And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, (10) though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, (11) And his spouse and his brother (12) And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, (13) and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. (14) But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell (15) snatching away the scalp, (16) It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, (17) And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). (18) ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; (19) bewailing when evil befalls him, (20) If good comes to him he holds back his hand, (21) Not so those devoted to Prayer;- (22) Those who are regular in their prayers. (23) And those in whose wealth there is a known right, (24) For the beggar and the destitute; (25) And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. (26) and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; (27) Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - (28) And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). (29) Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, (30) whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; (31) and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, (32) and perform their witnessings, (33) And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. (34) Those shall be in gardens, honored. (35)
