The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, (1) those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, (2) [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: (3) On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. (4) Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; (5) They surely take it to be far away, (6) Whereas We see it impending. (7) It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, (8) and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, (9) And no friend will ask of a friend, (10) Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, (11) And his wife and his brother, (12) And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, (13) and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. (14) But never. It is pure white flame (15) A remover of exteriors. (16) It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, (17) And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. (18) ۞ Surely man was created fretful, (19) when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, (20) And, when good befalleth him, grudging; (21) Except the observers of prayer - (22) Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; (23) And those in whose wealth there is a known right, (24) for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, (25) those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, (26) And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- (27) for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; (28) And those who guard their chastity, (29) except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- (30) But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- (31) And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. (32) And those who are upright in their testimonies, (33) And those who keep a guard on their prayer, (34) Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. (35)
