The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen (1) Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- (2) From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. (3) The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. (4) (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. (5) Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, (6) but We see it is nigh. (7) On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, (8) The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, (9) And not a friend shall ask a friend, (10) as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, (11) And his spouse and his brother (12) And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, (13) and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. (14) By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire (15) A remover of exteriors. (16) and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), (17) Who amasses and then hoards. (18) ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, (19) [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; (20) when good visits him, grudging, (21) Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), (22) who are constant in prayer; (23) They are those who assign a certain share of their property (24) For the needy and those dispossessed, (25) and those who believe in the Day of Judgement (26) and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement (27) Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. (28) and who are mindful of their chastity, (29) Are free of blame, (30) but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, (31) (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, (32) and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; (33) and who observe their prayers. (34) Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss). (35)
