The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- (1) To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. (2) From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. (3) (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. (4) So be patient (O Muhammad SAW), with a good patience. (5) Lo! they behold it afar off (6) Whereas We see it impending. (7) [It will take place] on a Day when the sky will be like molten lead, (8) And the mountains will be like wool, (9) And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend (10) Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, (11) His wife and his brother, (12) and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, (13) And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. (14) Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. (15) Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- (16) and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], (17) and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. (18) ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. (19) When evil comes upon him he is impatient; (20) but when good comes upon him, he is grudging (21) Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. (22) Those who are regular in their prayers. (23) And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. (24) for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, (25) And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. (26) And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - (27) For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- (28) And those who guard their private parts (29) Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, (30) (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), (31) and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: (32) And those who are firm upon their testimonies. (33) and who observe their prayers. (34) Those shall be in gardens, honored. (35)
