The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), (1) Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- (2) From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. (3) The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: (4) So be patient with gracious patience. (5) Lo! they behold it afar off (6) But We see it (quite) near. (7) It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, (8) And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. (9) no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, (10) although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, (11) his wife, his brother, (12) And his kin that sheltered him. (13) And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. (14) No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], (15) tearing away his skin! (16) Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). (17) and amassed wealth and hoarded it. (18) ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; (19) bewailing when evil befalls him, (20) And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. (21) save those that pray (22) and are constant in their Prayer; (23) And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, (24) for the beggar and the outcast, (25) who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, (26) And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- (27) Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. (28) those who preserve their chastity (29) Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, (30) But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; (31) And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, (32) and standby their witnessing, (33) And those who keep a guard on their prayer, (34) Those are highly honored in the Gardens. (35)
