The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, (1) (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; (2) [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: (3) The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: (4) So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. (5) Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, (6) While we behold it nigh: (7) The day the sky becomes like molten brass, (8) and the mountains become like wool, (9) And not a friend shall ask a friend, (10) Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. (11) his companion wife, his brother, (12) and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, (13) And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. (14) By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- (15) Dragging by the head, (16) It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, (17) And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). (18) ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; (19) [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; (20) but when good comes upon him, he is grudging (21) except those that pray (22) and are constant in their Prayer; (23) And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, (24) For the beggar and the destitute; (25) who confirm the Day of Reckoning (26) And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- (27) Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- (28) And those who guard their private parts, (29) save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy (30) But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- (31) And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. (32) And those who are upright in their testimonies, (33) And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. (34) Those are highly honored in the Gardens. (35)
