The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come (1) (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; (2) (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. (3) all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… (4) Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. (5) They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): (6) but We see it near. (7) The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, (8) and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, (9) No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend (10) (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, (11) His wife and his brother, (12) His kindred who sheltered him, (13) And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. (14) By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire (15) will strip-off the flesh (16) and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back (17) And masseth and then hoardeth. (18) ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. (19) When evil touches him, impatient, (20) If good comes to him he holds back his hand, (21) Except those who pray, (22) [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer (23) and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] (24) for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, (25) who confirm the Day of Reckoning (26) And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. (27) Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. (28) who guard their carnal desires (29) Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, (30) whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; (31) and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, (32) And those who stand by their testimony (33) And those who keep a guard on their prayer, (34) They will be in gardens, honored. (35)
