The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall (1) for the unbelievers, which none may avert, (2) a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, (3) To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. (5) They deem it to be remote. (6) But We see it [as] near. (7) It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, (8) and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. (9) And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend (10) though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, (11) and of his spouse, and of his brother, (12) And his kindred who sheltered him, (13) And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. (14) But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell (15) Flaying off the scalp-skin. (16) and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back (17) and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. (18) ۞ Surely man was created fretful, (19) When evil touches him, impatient, (20) And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. (21) save those that pray (22) and continue at their prayers, (23) And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. (24) For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. (25) And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, (26) and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord (27) the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, (28) and those who guard their private parts, (29) Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, (30) but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; (31) And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies; (33) and are steadfast in their prayers. (34) It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. (35)
