The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, (1) the unbelievers which none can prevent. (2) (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. (3) The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. (4) So be patient with gracious patience. (5) Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, (6) but We see it near. (7) The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.). (8) and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. (9) And no friend will ask after a friend, (10) Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. (11) his companion wife, his brother, (12) And his family who had stood by him, (13) And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: (14) But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, (15) That would skin the scalp. (16) It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), (17) and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. (18) ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. (19) Very nervous when touched by misfortune. (20) And when good touches him, withholding [of it], (21) Except those who pray, (22) Who persevere in devotion, (23) and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] (24) For the petitioner and the deprived - (25) And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; (26) And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment (27) For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- (28) And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). (29) Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy (30) but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, (31) And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies. (33) and who take due care of their Prayer: (34) Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. (35)
