The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall (1) Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- (2) From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. (3) The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. (4) Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. (5) They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, (6) And We see it nigh. (7) The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.). (8) The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, (9) And not a friend shall ask a friend, (10) They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. (11) his companion (wife), his brother, (12) His kindred who sheltered him, (13) and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. (14) By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- (15) Eager to roast; (16) Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). (17) Who amasses and then hoards. (18) ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. (19) Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; (20) and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, (21) Not so are the prayerful. (22) Who persevere in devotion, (23) and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] (24) for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, (25) who confirm the Day of Doom (26) and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; (27) Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. (28) And those who guard their chastity, (29) Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; (30) But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- (31) and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, (32) and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; (33) and who observe their prayers. (34) such people will receive due honor in Paradise. (35)
