The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
A requester seeks the punishment that will take place (1) to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God (2) [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. (3) The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. (4) So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. (5) They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. (6) but We see it near at hand. (7) It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, (8) and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, (9) No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend (10) Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, (11) His wife and his brother, (12) And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, (13) and all those on earth. (14) But never. It is pure white flame (15) Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! (16) It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] (17) and amassed wealth and hoarded it. (18) ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. (19) Very nervous when touched by misfortune. (20) And, when good befalleth him, grudging; (21) Except the observers of prayer - (22) Who are constant at their worship (23) And those in whose riches is a known right. (24) For the beggar and the destitute. (25) and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; (26) And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- (27) Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- (28) And those who of their private parts are guards. (29) Are free of blame, (30) But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; (31) and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, (32) and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; (33) And those who keep a guard on their prayer, (34) They will be in gardens, honored. (35)
