In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ The Inevitable Calamity! 1 What is the Sure Reality? 2 And what could make thee conceive what that laying-bare of the truth will be? 3 The Thamud and the 'Ad People (branded) as false the Stunning Calamity! 4 So as for Thamud, they were destroyed by the overpowering [blast]. 5 and the Ad were destroyed by a furiously raging wind-storm 6 which He willed against them for seven nights and eight days without cease, so that in the end thou couldst see those people laid low [in death,] as though they were so many [uprooted] trunks of hollow palm trees: 7 Do you now see any trace of them? 8 And Fir'awn and those before him and the overturned cities committed sin. 9 And they disobeyed their Lord's apostle, so He laid hold of them with a grip increasing. 10 Lo! when the waters rose, We carried you upon the ship 11 In order to make it a remembrance for you, and in order that the ears that store may remember. 12 Then when the Horn is blown with one blast 13 And the earth and mountains heaved and crushed to powder with one levelling blow, 14 Then on that Day, the Resurrection will occur, 15 and heaven shall be split, for upon that day it shall be very frail, 16 And the angels shall be on the sides thereof; and above them eight shall bear on that day your Lord's power. 17 On that day you shall be exposed to view-- no secret of yours shall remain hidden. 18 Then, he who is given his book in his right hand will say: 'Here, take and read my book! 19 “I was certain that I will confront my account.” 20 Then he shall be in a life well-pleasing 21 in a lofty Garden, 22 The fruits in bunches whereof will be low and near at hand. 23 (And it will be said unto those therein): Eat and drink at ease for that which ye sent on before you in past days. 24 But as for him whose record shall be placed in his left hand, he will exclaim: "Oh, would that I had never been shown this my record, 25 And I had not known what my account was: 26 Oh, would that it had been death! 27 Of no use was even my wealth. 28 “All my power has vanished.” 29 (The stern command will say): "Seize ye him, and bind ye him, 30 And then expose him to hell-fire 31 Then fasten him with a chain seventy cubits long: 32 for he did not believe in Almighty God, 33 nor did he urge the feeding of the needy. 34 So no friend has he here this Day, 35 Nor food other than suppuration (filth) 36 Which none but the wrongdoers eat. 37
