The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe, (1) You are not, [O Muhammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman. (2) Surely thou shalt have a wage unfailing; (3) For you are truly of a sublime character. (4) and [one day] thou shalt see, and they [who now deride thee] shall see, (5) which of you is the demented. (6) Surely thy Lord knows very well those who have gone astray from His way, and He knows very well those who are guided. (7) Therefor obey not thou the rejecters (8) They only want that you should relent, so that they may come to terms. (9) And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer (10) or to any defamer or one who spreads slander, (11) obstructing virtues, a sinful transgressor, (12) Ignoble, besides all that, base-born; (13) Because he is owner of riches and children. (14) When Our revelations are rehearsed unto him, he saith: fables of the ancients. (15) We shall brand him on the nose. (16) Verily We! We have proved them even as We proved the fellows of a garden when they sware that they would surely reap it in the morning. (17) without saying, "If it be God's will." (18) Then, a visitation from your Lord came down upon it while they slept, (19) Then in the morning it became as though it had been reaped. (20) In the morning they called out to one another, (21) Saying: Go early to your tilth if you would cut (the produce). (22) So they went off, while whispering to one another. (23) "Be sure to stop any poor person from entering the orchard today." (24) They left early in the morning bent on this purpose. (25) But when they saw the (garden), they said: "Verily, we have gone astray," (26) No, rather, we have been prevented' (27) Said one of them, more just (than the rest): "Did I not say to you, 'Why not glorify (Allah)?'" (28) They cried out: “Glory be to our Lord! Certainly we were sinners.” (29) Then they turned to each other reproaching. (30) They said 'Woe to us, truly we were insolent' (31) We hope that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this. Truly, we turn to our Lord (wishing for good that He may forgive our sins, and reward us in the Hereafter)." (32) Such is Our chastisement; and the punishment of the Hereafter will be greater, if only they knew! (33)
