The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ NUN. I CALL to witness the pen and what they inscribe, (1) Thou art not, by thy Sustainer's grace, a madman! (2) Indeed, there is an unfailing wage for you. (3) And indeed, you are of a great moral character. (4) So very soon, you will see and they too will realise (5) which of you is a prey to madness. (6) Surely your Lord knows well those who have strayed from His Way just as He knows well those who are on the Right Way. (7) Hence, defer not to [the likes and dislikes of] those who give the lie to the truth: (8) They wish that you should compromise (in religion out of courtesy) with them, so they (too) would compromise with you. (9) Heed not the type of despicable men,- ready with oaths, (10) A defamer, spreader abroad of slander. (11) A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful, (12) who is ignoble and besides all that, base-born; (13) It is because he is possessed of wealth and children (14) When Our signs are recited to him, he says, 'Fairy-tales of the ancients!' (15) We will soon singe his pig-nose. (16) Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning (17) without adding ("if God wills"). (18) Then there passed by on the (garden) something (fire) from your Lord at night and burnt it while they were asleep. (19) and the garden was turned into a barren desert. (20) At daybreak they called to each other: (21) 'Come out to your tillage if you want to reap' (22) So they went off, whispering to one another, (23) No Miskin (poor man) shall enter upon you into it today. (24) And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able. (25) But when they saw the (garden), they said: "Verily, we have gone astray," (26) Indeed, we are utterly ruined!" (27) The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?' " (28) They said, 'Glory be to God, our Lord; truly, we were evildoers.' (29) So they came towards each other, blaming. (30) They said: “Woe to us! We had indeed transgressed. (31) Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous." (32) Such is the punishment (in this life), but truly, the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they but knew. (33)
