The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ Nun. By the pen and that which they write (therewith), (1) you are not, because of the favor of your Lord, mad. (2) And verily, for you (O Muhammad SAW) will be an endless reward. (3) for, behold, thou keepest indeed to a sublime way of life; (4) You will see, and they will see, (5) Which of you is the demented. (6) Verily thy Lord! He is the best Knower of him who strayeth from His path, and He is the best Knower of the guided one. (7) Hence, defer not to [the likes and dislikes of] those who give the lie to the truth: (8) They wish that you should be pliant so they (too) would be pliant. (9) Do not heed a contemptible swearer, (10) Detracter, spreader abroad of slanders, (11) hinderer of good, guilty aggressor, coarse-grained, (12) Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender. (13) Because he is a possessor of wealth and children, (14) When Our revelations are recited to him, he says, "These are ancient legends". (15) We shall brand him on the nose. (16) We have put them [i.e., the Makkans] to test even as We put to test the owners of the orchard when they vowed that they would gather the fruit of their orchard in the morning, (17) Without making exception. (18) whereupon a visitation for thy Sustainer came upon that [garden] while they were asleep, (19) Then in the morning it became as though it had been reaped. (20) In the morning they called to one another, (21) "Go early to your farms, if you want to pluck the fruits". (22) So they went, while they consulted together secretly, (23) [Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person." (24) They set out early in the morning, thinking they had the power to prevent. (25) But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost; (26) “In fact, we are unfortunate.” (27) The more upright of the two said, "Did I not bid you to glorify God?" (28) They answered: "Limitless in His glory is our Sustainer! Verily, we were doing wrong!" (29) Then they began to reproach one another. (30) They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors. (31) Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous." (32) SUCH is the suffering [with which We try some people in this world]; but greater by far will be the suffering [which sinners shall have to bear] in the life to come - if they but knew it! (33)
