The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and what the scribes write. (1) you are not, because of the favor of your Lord, mad. (2) And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted. (3) and you are certainly on the most exalted standard of moral excellence. (4) You will see and they will also see (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided. (7) So do not yield to the rejecters. (8) Their desire is that thou shouldst be pliant: so would they be pliant. (9) And do not obey every mean swearer, (10) Detracter, spreader abroad of slanders, (11) or to one who places obstacles in the way of good being done or to the wicked transgressor, (12) who is ignoble and besides all that, base-born; (13) (He was so) because he had wealth and children. (14) When to him are rehearsed Our Signs, "Tales of the ancients", he cries! (15) Soon shall We brand (the beast) on the snout! (16) Verily We! We have proved them even as We proved the fellows of a garden when they sware that they would surely reap it in the morning. (17) without making any allowance (for the will of Allah). (18) So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep. (19) and the garden was turned into a barren desert. (20) In the morning they called out to one another, (21) [Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit." (22) So they departed, whispering together, (23) "Let no needy person come to you within it today." (24) And they went forth early, determined upon their purpose. (25) But when they saw it they said: 'We have surely gone astray. (26) [and then,] "Nay, but we have been rendered destitute!" (27) The best among them said: “Did I not say to you: why do you not give glory to (your Lord)?” (28) They said, "Glory be to God, our Lord. We have surely done wrong." (29) Then they started blaming one another, (30) Saying: "Alas the woe, we were iniquitous. (31) Maybe our Lord will give us better than this. We turn to our Lord in supplication." (32) Such was the punishment. And verily the punishment of the Hereafter is greater if they did but know. (33)
