The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and by that which they inscribe. (1) By the grace of your Lord, you are not a mad man. (2) And indeed for you is an unlimited reward. (3) You have attained a high moral standard. (4) So you shall see, and they (too) shall see, (5) Which of you is the demented. (6) Your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His path and who is rightly guided. (7) Then do not obey the deniers. (8) Their desire is that thou shouldst be pliant: so would they be pliant. (9) Do not yield to one persistent in swearing, (10) Or backbiter, calumniator, slanderer, (11) the hinderer of good, the transgressor, the sinful; (12) [or] one who is cruel, by greed possessed, and in addition to all this, utterly useless [to his fellow-men]. (13) Because he possesses wealth and (numerous) sons. (14) When Our revelations are rehearsed unto him, he saith: fables of the ancients. (15) [For this] We shall brand him with indelible disgrace! (16) Verily We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they resolved to gather the fruits of the (garden) in the morning. (17) Without saying: Insha' Allah (If Allah will). (18) Then, a visitation from your Lord came down upon it while they slept, (19) And by morning it lay as if it had already been harvested, a barren land. (20) At daybreak they called to each other: (21) "Go ye to your tilth (betimes) in the morning, if ye would gather the fruits." (22) They all left, whispering to one another, (23) [Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person." (24) And they opened the morning, strong in an (unjust) resolve. (25) But when they saw it, they said: Most surely we have gone astray (26) “In fact, we are unfortunate.” (27) Said one of them, more just (than the rest): "Did I not say to you, 'Why not glorify (Allah)?'" (28) They said, "All glory belongs to God. We have certainly been unjust". (29) And they advanced one upon another, blaming each other. (30) They said, "Alas for us, our behaviour was beyond the pale. (31) Maybe, our Lord will give us instead one better than it; surely to our Lord do we make our humble petition. (32) Such was their punishment, [in this life]. But the punishment of the life to come is much more severe, if only they knew it! (33)
