The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Nun. By the Pen and the (Record) which (men) write,- (1) Thou art not, through the grace of thy Lord, mad. (2) Indeed, there is an unfailing wage for you. (3) for, behold, thou keepest indeed to a sublime way of life; (4) So very soon, you will see and they too will realise (5) Who is distracted. (6) Lo! thy Lord is Best Aware of him who strayeth from His way, and He is Best Aware of those who walk aright. (7) Therefor obey not thou the rejecters (8) They wish that thou shouldst compromise, then they would compromise. (9) And yield not to any mean swearer (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) the hinderer of good, the transgressor, the sinful; (12) Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender. (13) Simply because he possesses wealth and children. (14) When Our revelations are rehearsed unto him, he saith: fables of the ancients. (15) We shall brand him on his nose. (16) We have tried them as we tried the owners of a certain orchard, who vowed to harvest all its fruits the next morning, (17) And they did not say, “If Allah wills”. (18) Then a visitation from thy Lord came upon it while they slept (19) and so by morning the orchard lay as though it had been fully harvested. (20) At daybreak they called to each other: (21) Saying: Run unto your field if ye would pluck (the fruit). (22) So they went off speaking to each other in a low voice. (23) 'No needy man shall enter it today against your will.' (24) And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able. (25) But as soon as they beheld [the garden and could not recognize] it, they exclaimed, "Surely we have lost our way!" (26) [and then,] "Nay, but we have been rendered destitute!" (27) Said one of them, more just (than the rest): "Did I not say to you, 'Why not glorify (Allah)?'" (28) They said: Glory be to our Lord, surely we were unjust. (29) Some of them started to blame others. (30) They said, 'Woe, alas for us! Truly, we were insolent. (31) “Hopefully, our Lord will give us a better replacement than this we now incline towards our Lord.” (32) Such is Our chastisement; and the punishment of the Hereafter will be greater, if only they knew! (33)
