The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Noon. I swear by the pen and what the angels write, (1) By your Lord's Grace, you are not afflicted with madness, (2) And verily, for you (O Muhammad SAW) will be an endless reward. (3) Surely, you (Prophet Muhammad) are of a great morality. (4) Soon wilt thou see, and they will see, (5) which of you is the demented. (6) Verily, your Lord knows better, who (among men) has gone astray from His Path, and He knows better those who are guided. (7) Do not, then, yield to those who reject the Truth, decrying it as false; (8) They wish that thou shouldst compromise, then they would compromise. (9) Heed not the type of despicable men,- ready with oaths, (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) Who hinders men from (doing) good, the transgressor, the iniquitous, (12) Crude, and above all, mean and infamous, (13) Because he* has some wealth and sons. (Walid bin Mugaira, who cursed the Holy Prophet.) (14) When to him are rehearsed Our Signs, "Tales of the ancients", he cries! (15) We will brand him upon the snout. (16) Verily We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they resolved to gather the fruits of the (garden) in the morning. (17) Without saying: Insha' Allah (If Allah will). (18) Then, a visitation from your Lord came down upon it while they slept, (19) So the (garden) became, by the morning, like a dark and desolate spot, (whose fruit had been gathered). (20) Then they called out one to another as soon as the morning broke, (21) Saying: Go early to your tilth if you would cut (the produce). (22) So they departed, conversing in secret low tones, (saying)- (23) Saying: No poor man shall enter it today upon you. (24) and early they went, strongly bent upon their purpose. (25) But when they saw it, they said, "We must have lost our way. (26) Aye! it is we who are deprived! (27) The best of them said: Did I not say to you, Why do you not glorify (Allah)? (28) They answered: "Limitless in His glory is our Sustainer! Verily, we were doing wrong!" (29) And they advanced one upon another, blaming each other. (30) They said: "Woe to us! Verily, we were Taghun (transgressors and disobedient, etc.) (31) May be our Lord will give us a better orchard in its stead; we turn to Him." (32) Such is the chastisement; and the chastisement of the world to come, is assuredly greater, did they but know. (33)
