The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ NUN. I CALL to witness the pen and what they inscribe, (1) you are not, because of the favor of your Lord, mad. (2) Surely thou shalt have a wage unfailing; (3) And most surely you conform (yourself) to sublime morality. (4) Soon wilt thou see, and they will see, (5) which of you was bereft of reason. (6) Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided. (7) Then do not obey the deniers. (8) they would wish you to be pliant so that they too may be pliant. (9) And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer (10) [And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip - (11) Who hinders men from (doing) good, the transgressor, the iniquitous, (12) who is ignoble and besides all that, base-born; (13) Because he* has some wealth and sons. (Walid bin Mugaira, who cursed the Holy Prophet.) (14) When Our communications are recited to him, he says: Stories of those of yore. (15) We shall brand him over the nose! (16) Surely We will try them as We tried the owners of the garden, when they swore that they would certainly cut off the produce in the morning, (17) And were not willing to set aside a portion (for the poor). (18) Then there passed by on the (garden) something (fire) from your Lord at night and burnt it while they were asleep. (19) So the (garden) became black by the morning, like a pitch dark night (in complete ruins). (20) (Then) in the morning they called out to one another, saying: (21) Saying: go out betimes to your tilth if ye would reap. (22) So off they went, whispering to one another: (23) [Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person." (24) And they went in the morning with strong intention, thinking that they have power (to prevent the poor taking anything of the fruits therefrom). (25) But when they saw the (garden), they said: "Verily, we have gone astray," (26) nay, rather we have been robbed!' (27) The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?' " (28) They said, "All glory belongs to God. We have certainly been unjust". (29) and then they turned upon one another with mutual reproaches. (30) They said: “Woe to us! We had indeed transgressed. (31) Belike our Lord may exchange for us better garden than this; verily we are unto our Lord beseechers. (32) SUCH is the suffering [with which We try some people in this world]; but greater by far will be the suffering [which sinners shall have to bear] in the life to come - if they but knew it! (33)
