The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the Pen and the (Record) which (men) write,- (1) By the grace of your Lord, you are not a mad man. (2) And verily thine shall be a hire unending. (3) surely thou art upon a mighty morality. (4) So you will see, and they will realise, (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Lo! thy Lord is Best Aware of him who strayeth from His way, and He is Best Aware of those who walk aright. (7) Do not give in to the deniers of truth. (8) they wish you would compromise, then, they would compromise. (9) And obey not thou any swearer ignominous. (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) One who excessively forbids the good, transgressor, sinner. (12) Foul mouthed, and in addition to all this, of improper lineage. (13) Simply because he possesses wealth and children. (14) and whenever Our verses are rehearsed to him, he says: “These are fairy- tales of times gone by.” (15) We shall mark him upon his nose! (16) Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning (17) without adding ("if God wills"). (18) Then, a visitation from your Lord came down upon it while they slept, (19) Then in the morning it became as though it had been reaped. (20) In the morning they called out to one another, (21) 'Come out to your tillage if you want to reap' (22) So they departed, conversing in secret low tones (saying), (23) “No destitute person shall enter it today.” (24) And they left at early morn, assuming they were in control of their purpose. (25) When they saw (and did not recognise it) they said: "Surely we have lost the way. (26) (No, we are not lost.) In fact, we have been deprived of everything". (27) The best among them said, “Did I not tell you, ‘Why do you not proclaim His purity?’” (28) They said: Glory be to our Lord, surely we were unjust. (29) Then they began to heap reproaches on each other. (30) They said, "Alas for us, our behaviour was beyond the pale. (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than this in place thereof. Lo! we beseech our Lord. (32) Such is the chastisement, and certainly the chastisement of the hereafter is greater, did they but know! (33)
