The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and what the scribes write. (1) Thou art not, by thy Sustainer's grace, a madman! (2) And lo! thine verily will be a reward unfailing. (3) You have attained a high moral standard. (4) You shall see and they will see (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Verily thy Lord! He is the best Knower of him who strayeth from His path, and He is the best Knower of the guided one. (7) Therefore do not listen to the deniers. (8) They wish that thou shouldst compromise, then they would compromise. (9) Neither obey thou each feeble oath-monger, (10) Defamer, going about with slander (11) [or] the withholder of good, [or] the sinful aggressor, (12) the coarse-grained, and above all mean and ignoble; (13) Because he is owner of riches and children. (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says: 'They are but fairytales of the ancients' (15) Soon shall We brand (the beast) on the snout! (16) Surely We will try them as We tried the owners of the garden, when they swore that they would certainly cut off the produce in the morning, (17) without adding ("if God wills"). (18) Then there came on the (garden) a visitation from thy Lord, (which swept away) all around, while they were asleep. (19) And in the morning it was as if plucked. (20) At daybreak they called out to one another: (21) "Go early to your farms, if you want to pluck the fruits". (22) So they departed, whispering together, (23) "Indeed, no needy person shall enter it today [and come] upon you [unawares,]" (24) And in the morning they went, having the power to prevent. (25) But when they saw it, they said, "We must have lost our way. (26) “In fact, we are unfortunate.” (27) The most moderate of them said: said I not unto you, wherefore hallow him ye not! (28) "Glory to our Lord," they said; we were really in the wrong." (29) Then they turned to each other reproaching. (30) They said 'Woe to us, truly we were insolent' (31) Belike our Lord may exchange for us better garden than this; verily we are unto our Lord beseechers. (32) Such is the chastisement, and certainly the chastisement of the hereafter is greater, did they but know! (33)
