The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nun. CONSIDER the pen, and all that they write [therewith]! (1) By the grace of your Lord, you are not a mad man. (2) And indeed for you is an unlimited reward. (3) For you are verily born of sublime nature. (4) So very soon, you will see and they too will realise (5) Which of you is the demented. (6) Surely your Lord best knows him who errs from His way, and He best knows the followers of the right course. (7) So (O Muhammad SAW) obey not the deniers [(of Islamic Monotheism those who belie the Verses of Allah), the Oneness of Allah, and the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad SAW), etc.] (8) They would like you to relent to them so that they could also relent towards you. (9) Furthermore, defer not to the contemptible swearer of oaths, (10) Or backbiter, calumniator, slanderer, (11) obstructing virtues, a sinful transgressor, (12) Gross, and therewithal ignoble. (13) (who so acts) simply because he has wealth and sons, (14) When you recite Our revelations to him, he says: "These are fables of long ago." (15) We will brand him upon the snout. (16) Now We have tried them, even as We tried the owners of the garden when they swore they would pluck in the morning (17) without saying, "If it be God's will." (18) Then a visitation from thy Lord came upon it while they slept (19) And in the morning it was as if plucked. (20) In the morning they called out to one another, (21) Saying: go out betimes to your tilth if ye would reap. (22) So they went, while they consulted together secretly, (23) "Let no needy person come to you within it today." (24) And they opened the morning, strong in an (unjust) resolve. (25) But when they saw it, they said: Lo! we are in error! (26) “In fact, we are unfortunate.” (27) The best among them said: “Did I not say to you: why do you not give glory to (your Lord)?” (28) They said, 'Glory be to God, our Lord; truly, we were evildoers.' (29) and then they turned upon one another with mutual reproaches. (30) [In the end] they said: "Oh, woe unto us! Verily, we did behave outrageously! (31) Maybe, our Lord will give us instead one better than it; surely to our Lord do we make our humble petition. (32) Such is the chastisement, and certainly the chastisement of the hereafter is greater, did they but know! (33)
