The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen, and all that they write! (1) (Muhammad), you are not insane, thanks to the bounty of your Lord. (2) There is surely reward unending for you, (3) And indeed you possess an exemplary character. (4) and [one day] thou shalt see, and they [who now deride thee] shall see, (5) Which of you is the demented. (6) Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided. (7) Then do not obey the deniers. (8) They would like you to relent to them so that they could also relent towards you. (9) Nor ever listen to any excessive oath maker, ignoble person. (10) A defamer, spreader abroad of slander. (11) or to one who places obstacles in the way of good being done or to the wicked transgressor, (12) Cruel, after all that base-born (of illegitimate birth), (13) because he has wealth and sons. (14) When you recite Our revelations to him, he says: "These are fables of long ago." (15) Anon We shall brand him on snout. (16) Surely We will try them as We tried the owners of the garden, when they swore that they would certainly cut off the produce in the morning, (17) without saying, "If it be God's will." (18) So an envoy from your Lord completed his round upon the garden, whilst they were sleeping. (19) Then in the morning it became as though it had been reaped. (20) At daybreak they called to each other: (21) Saying: go out betimes to your tilth if ye would reap. (22) They all left, whispering to one another, (23) No needy man shall enter it to-day against you. (24) And they went out early, determined in their resolve. (25) But as soon as they beheld [the garden and could not recognize] it, they exclaimed, "Surely we have lost our way!" (26) [and then,] "Nay, but we have been rendered destitute!" (27) A reasonable one among them said, "Did I not tell you that you should glorify God?" (28) They said: "Glory to Our Lord! Verily, we have been Zalimun (wrong-doers, etc.)." (29) Then they turned to each other reproaching. (30) They said: woe unto us! verily we! we have been arrogant. (31) Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous." (32) Such was their punishment. But the punishment of the Everlasting Life is much greater, if they but knew. (33)
