The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ NUN. I CALL to witness the pen and what they inscribe, (1) Thou art not, by thy Sustainer's grace, a madman! (2) And verily, for you (O Muhammad SAW) will be an endless reward. (3) And thou (standest) on an exalted standard of character. (4) Anon thou wilt see and they will see. (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Verily it is thy Lord that knoweth best, which (among men) hath strayed from His Path: and He knoweth best those who receive (true) Guidance. (7) Do not, then, yield to those who reject the Truth, decrying it as false; (8) Their desire is that thou shouldst be pliant: so would they be pliant. (9) And do not obey every mean swearer, (10) Defamer, going about with slander (11) [or] the withholder of good, [or] the sinful aggressor, (12) Cruel, after all that base-born (of illegitimate birth), (13) Simply because he possesses wealth and children. (14) When Our revelations are recited to him, he says, "These are ancient legends". (15) We shall brand him upon the muzzle! (16) [As for such sinners,] behold, We [but] try them as We tried the owners of a certain garden who vowed that they would surely harvest its fruit on the morrow, (17) And they did not say, “If Allah wills”. (18) Then there passed by on the (garden) something (fire) from your Lord at night and burnt it while they were asleep. (19) So the (garden) became black by the morning, like a pitch dark night (in complete ruins). (20) (Then) in the morning they called out to one another, saying: (21) saying, "Be quick to reach your orchard, if you want to gather all your fruits." (22) So they set out, while lowering their voices, (23) "Be sure to stop any poor person from entering the orchard today." (24) and early they went, strongly bent upon their purpose. (25) But when they saw it, they said, "We must have lost our way. (26) [and then,] "Nay, but we have been rendered destitute!" (27) Said one of them, more just (than the rest): "Did I not say to you, 'Why not glorify (Allah)?'" (28) "Glory to our Lord," they said; we were really in the wrong." (29) And they came blaming one another. (30) They said: “Woe to us! We had indeed transgressed. (31) "It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this: for we do turn to Him (in repentance)!" (32) Such was their punishment. But the punishment of the Everlasting Life is much greater, if they but knew. (33)
