The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and by what you write, (1) Thou art not, by thy Sustainer's grace, a madman! (2) Nay, verily for thee is a Reward unfailing: (3) For you are truly of a sublime character. (4) So very soon, you will see and they too will realise (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Verily it is thy Lord that knoweth best, which (among men) hath strayed from His Path: and He knoweth best those who receive (true) Guidance. (7) So obey thou not those who cry lies. (8) They wish that thou shouldst compromise, then they would compromise. (9) And do not obey every mean swearer, (10) or to any defamer or one who spreads slander, (11) or to one who places obstacles in the way of good being done or to the wicked transgressor, (12) the crude of low character (13) just because he has wealth and sons, (14) when Our revelations are recited to him, he says, "These are just ancient fables." (15) We shall brand him on the muzzle. (16) Verily We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they resolved to gather the fruits of the (garden) in the morning. (17) Without making exception. (18) So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep. (19) and in the morning it was as if it were a garden plucked. (20) They then called out to each other at daybreak. (21) “Hurry to your orchard if you would gather its fruit.” (22) So they went off, saying one unto another in low tones: (23) 'No needy person shall set foot in it today' (24) And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able. (25) But when they saw it, they said, 'Surely we are gone astray; (26) rather, we are utterly ruined.” (27) The more upright of the two said, "Did I not bid you to glorify God?" (28) They said: Glory be to our Lord, surely we were unjust. (29) Then some of them drew near unto others, self-reproaching. (30) They said: "Woe to us! Verily, we were Taghun (transgressors and disobedient, etc.) (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than it in exchange. To our Lord we humbly turn' (32) Such is the torment. And the torment of the Hereafter is far greater; if they but knew. (33)
