The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen, and all that they write! (1) Thou art not, by the Grace of thy Lord, mad or possessed. (2) Surely thou shalt have a wage unfailing; (3) And indeed you possess an exemplary character. (4) You will see, and they will see, (5) #NAME? (6) Lo! thy Lord is Best Aware of him who strayeth from His way, and He is Best Aware of those who walk aright. (7) Therefor obey not thou the rejecters (8) They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you]. (9) Do not yield to any contemptible swearer of oaths, (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) Hinderer of the good, trespasser; sinner. (12) Crude, and above all, mean and infamous, (13) or that because he may possess wealth and children. (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples." (15) [For this] We shall brand him with indelible disgrace! (16) We have indeed tested them the way We had tested the owners of the garden when they swore that they would reap its harvest the next morning. (17) And they made not the exception. (18) Then, a visitation from your Lord came down upon it while they slept, (19) and in the morning it was if the garden had been reaped. (20) Now when they rose at early morn, they called unto one another, (21) Saying: go out betimes to your tilth if ye would reap. (22) So they went off, whispering to one another, (23) Saying: No poor man shall enter it today upon you. (24) and early they went, strongly bent upon their purpose. (25) But when they saw it, they said: Most surely we have gone astray (26) Rather, we have been deprived." (27) One who was temperate among them, said: "Did I not say: 'Why don't you priase God?'" (28) They cried out: “Glory be to our Lord! Certainly we were sinners.” (29) Then some of them advanced against others, blaming each other. (30) Said they: O woe to us! surely we were inordinate: (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than this in place thereof. Lo! we beseech our Lord. (32) Such is the punishment (in this life), but truly, the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they but knew. (33)
