The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and by that which they inscribe. (1) You are not, [O Muhammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman. (2) And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted. (3) and you are certainly on the most exalted standard of moral excellence. (4) So very soon, you will see and they too will realise (5) which of you was bereft of reason. (6) Verily your Lord knows those who have gone astray from His path, and He knows those who are guided on the way. (7) So obey thou not those who cry lies. (8) They wish that thou shouldst compromise, then they would compromise. (9) Do not yield to any contemptible swearer of oaths, (10) back-biting, gossiping, (11) Hinderer of the good, trespasser; sinner. (12) moreover ignoble, (13) Is it because he is possessed of worldly goods and children (14) that, whenever Our messages are conveyed to him, such a one says, "Fables of ancient times"? (15) We shall mark him upon his nose! (16) We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden who had sworn that in the morning they would reap it, (17) without adding ("if God wills"). (18) Then there encompassed it a visitation from your Lord while they were sleeping. (19) and in the morning it was as if it were a garden plucked. (20) And they cried out one unto another in the morning, (21) Saying: Go early to your tilth if you would cut (the produce). (22) They all left, whispering to one another, (23) [Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person." (24) And they left at early morn, assuming they were in control of their purpose. (25) But when they saw it they said: 'We have surely gone astray. (26) rather, we are utterly ruined.” (27) Said the most right-minded among them: "Did I not tell you, 'Will you not extol God's limitless glory?'" (28) They said, “Purity is to our Lord we have indeed been unjust.” (29) And they advanced one upon another, blaming each other. (30) [In the end] they said: "Oh, woe unto us! Verily, we did behave outrageously! (31) Maybe our Lord will give us better than this. We turn to our Lord in supplication." (32) Such is the punishment; and indeed the punishment of the Hereafter is the greatest, if only they knew! (33)
