The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and by that which they inscribe. (1) Thou art not, by the Grace of thy Lord, mad or possessed. (2) And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted. (3) And most surely you conform (yourself) to sublime morality. (4) You will see, and they will see, (5) Who is distracted. (6) Verily your Lord knows those who have gone astray from His path, and He knows those who are guided on the way. (7) Do not yield to those who reject the Truth. (8) Their desire is that thou shouldst be pliant: so would they be pliant. (9) Do not yield to one persistent in swearing, (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) hinderer of good, guilty aggressor, coarse-grained, (12) Greedy therewithal, intrusive. (13) Because he possesses wealth and (numerous) sons. (14) when Our revelations are recited to him, he says, "These are just ancient fables." (15) Soon shall We brand (the beast) on the snout! (16) We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden who had sworn that in the morning they would reap it, (17) And they did not say, “If Allah wills”. (18) Then there came on the (garden) a visitation from thy Lord, (which swept away) all around, while they were asleep. (19) So it became as black, barren land. (20) In the morning they called out to one another, (21) 'Come forth betimes upon your tillage, if you would pluck!' (22) So they set out, while lowering their voices, (23) [Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person." (24) They went betimes, strong in (this) purpose. (25) But as soon as they beheld the orchard, (they cried out): “We have certainly lost the way; (26) Indeed, we are utterly ruined!" (27) One who was temperate among them, said: "Did I not say: 'Why don't you priase God?'" (28) They said: "Glory to our Lord! Verily we have been doing wrong!" (29) Then some of them drew near unto others, self-reproaching. (30) They said, 'Woe, alas for us! Truly, we were insolent. (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than it in exchange. To our Lord we humbly turn' (32) Such was their punishment, [in this life]. But the punishment of the life to come is much more severe, if only they knew it! (33)
