The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen, and all that they write! (1) thou art not, by the blessing of thy Lord, a man possessed. (2) Indeed, there is an unfailing wage for you. (3) For you are verily born of sublime nature. (4) So you shall see, and they (too) shall see, (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Verily it is thy Lord that knoweth best, which (among men) hath strayed from His Path: and He knoweth best those who receive (true) Guidance. (7) So do not comply with those who deny: (8) They want you to make concessions to them and then they will reciprocate. (9) Do not yield to any contemptible swearer of oaths, (10) Defamer, going about with slander (11) [or] the withholder of good, [or] the sinful aggressor, (12) the crude of low character (13) Because he possesses wealth and (numerous) sons. (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “These are stories of earlier people.” (15) We shall brand him on the nose. (16) We have tested them in the same way as we tested the dwellers of the garden (in Yemen) when they swore to pluck all the fruits of the garden in the morning, (17) And were not willing to set aside a portion (for the poor). (18) Then, a visitation from your Lord came down upon it while they slept, (19) So by the morning it seemed as though picked clean. (20) Then they called out one to another as soon as the morning broke, (21) Saying: Run unto your field if ye would pluck (the fruit). (22) So they departed, talking in low voices: (23) “Make sure that no needy person enters your garden this day.” (24) And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able. (25) Then when they beheld it, they said: verily we have strayed. (26) Indeed, we are utterly ruined!" (27) (Whereupon) the best among them said: 'Did I not say to you to exalt (Allah)' (28) They said: Glorified be our Lord! Lo! we have been wrong-doers. (29) And they advanced one upon another, blaming each other. (30) They said: Alas for us! In truth we were outrageous. (31) "It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this: for we do turn to Him (in repentance)!" (32) Such is the Punishment (in this life); but greater is the Punishment in the Hereafter,- if only they knew! (33)
