The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and that which they write (therewith), (1) Thou art not, by the Grace of thy Lord, mad or possessed. (2) You will certainly receive a never-ending reward. (3) And indeed, you are of a great moral character. (4) and [one day] thou shalt see, and they [who now deride thee] shall see, (5) which of you was bereft of reason. (6) Lo! thy Lord is Best Aware of him who strayeth from His way, and He is Best Aware of those who walk aright. (7) Then do not obey the deniers. (8) They would like you to relent to them so that they could also relent towards you. (9) Nor ever listen to any excessive oath maker, ignoble person. (10) or to any defamer or one who spreads slander, (11) Hinderer of the good, transgressor, malefactor (12) Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender. (13) Because he possesses wealth and (numerous) sons. (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples." (15) Soon shall We brand him on his snout. (16) We have indeed tested them the way We had tested the owners of the garden when they swore that they would reap its harvest the next morning. (17) But did not add: "If God may please." (18) Then a visitation from thy Lord came upon it while they slept (19) and the garden was turned into a barren desert. (20) At daybreak they called out to one another: (21) Saying: Run unto your field if ye would pluck (the fruit). (22) Thus they launched forth, whispering unto one another, (23) "Indeed, no needy person shall enter it today [and come] upon you [unawares,]" (24) And they went out betimes determined in purpose. (25) But when they saw it, they said, "We must have lost our way. (26) No. In fact we have been deprived of it." (27) The more upright of the two said, "Did I not bid you to glorify God?" (28) They said: "Glory to Our Lord! Verily, we have been Zalimun (wrong-doers, etc.)." (29) Then they approached one another, blaming each other. (30) Saying: "Alas the woe, we were iniquitous. (31) "It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this: for we do turn to Him (in repentance)!" (32) Such is the chastisement, and certainly the chastisement of the hereafter is greater, did they but know! (33)
