The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ Nun. [These letters (Nun, etc.) are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. By the pen and what the (angels) write (in the Records of men). (1) Thou art not, for thy Lord's favour unto thee, a madman. (2) Surely thou shalt have a wage unfailing; (3) For you are verily born of sublime nature. (4) You shall see and they will see (5) which of you is the demented. (6) Verily your Lord knows those who have gone astray from His path, and He knows those who are guided on the way. (7) Hence, defer not to [the likes and dislikes of] those who give the lie to the truth: (8) They wish that you should be pliant so they (too) would be pliant. (9) And obey not everyone who swears much, and is considered worthless, (10) [And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip - (11) Who hinders men from (doing) good, the transgressor, the iniquitous, (12) Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender. (13) or that because he may possess wealth and children. (14) When Our signs are recited to him, he says, 'Fairy-tales of the ancients!' (15) We shall brand him over the nose! (16) We have indeed tested them the way We had tested the owners of the garden when they swore that they would reap its harvest the next morning. (17) and they added not the saving words. (18) whereupon a visitation for thy Sustainer came upon that [garden] while they were asleep, (19) So the (garden) became, by the morning, like a dark and desolate spot, (whose fruit had been gathered). (20) And they called one another at morning, (21) saying, "Be quick to reach your orchard, if you want to gather all your fruits." (22) So they set out, while lowering their voices, (23) “Make sure that no needy person enters your garden this day.” (24) And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able. (25) But when they saw it, they said, "We must have lost our way. (26) Nay! we are made to suffer privation. (27) The best among them said: Said I not unto you: Why glorify ye not (Allah)? (28) 'Exaltations to Allah, our Lord' they said, 'We were truly harmdoers' (29) Some of them started to blame others. (30) They said, "Woe to us. We have been arrogant. (31) Perhaps our Lord will replace it with a better garden. We turn in repentance to our Lord". (32) SUCH is the suffering [with which We try some people in this world]; but greater by far will be the suffering [which sinners shall have to bear] in the life to come - if they but knew it! (33)
