The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Nun. CONSIDER the pen, and all that they write [therewith]! (1) You are not insane, by the munificence of your Lord. (2) And verily, thine shall be a reward neverending (3) For you are verily born of sublime nature. (4) So thou shalt see, and they will see, (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Verily thy Lord! He is the best Knower of him who strayeth from His path, and He is the best Knower of the guided one. (7) Do not give in to the deniers of truth. (8) They wish that thou shouldst compromise, then they would compromise. (9) And yield not to any mean swearer (10) [And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip - (11) [or] the withholder of good, [or] the sinful aggressor, (12) [or] one who is cruel, by greed possessed, and in addition to all this, utterly useless [to his fellow-men]. (13) Because he* has some wealth and sons. (Walid bin Mugaira, who cursed the Holy Prophet.) (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “These are stories of earlier people.” (15) We shall brand him on the muzzle. (16) We have tried them as we tried the owners of a certain orchard, who vowed to harvest all its fruits the next morning, (17) without making any allowance (for the will of Allah). (18) Then there passed by on the (garden) something (fire) from your Lord at night and burnt it while they were asleep. (19) So the (garden) became black by the morning, like a pitch dark night (in complete ruins). (20) In the morning they called to one another, (21) That, “Go to your fields at early morn, if you want to harvest.” (22) So they went off, saying one unto another in low tones: (23) 'No needy man shall enter it today against your will.' (24) And in the morning they went, having the power to prevent. (25) Then when they saw it, they said, “We have indeed strayed.” (26) rather, we are utterly ruined.” (27) The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?' " (28) They said: hallowed be Our Lord! verily we have been wrong-doers. (29) Then some of them drew near unto others, self-reproaching. (30) They said: "Alas for us! We have indeed transgressed! (31) Maybe our Lord will give us better than this. We turn to our Lord in supplication." (32) Such is Our chastisement; and the punishment of the Hereafter will be greater, if only they knew! (33)
