The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and that which they write (therewith), (1) Thou art not, by thy Sustainer's grace, a madman! (2) And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted. (3) And most surely you conform (yourself) to sublime morality. (4) So very soon, you will see and they too will realise (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Indeed, your Lord knows very well those who strayed from His Path, and those who are guided. (7) So do not yield to the rejecters. (8) They only want that you should relent, so that they may come to terms. (9) Heed not the type of despicable men,- ready with oaths, (10) or to any defamer or one who spreads slander, (11) the hinderer of good, the transgressor, the sinful; (12) ill-mannered, and moraly corrupt (13) Simply because he possesses wealth and children. (14) When you recite Our revelations to him, he says: "These are fables of long ago." (15) We shall brand him over the nose! (16) Verily We! We have proved them even as We proved the fellows of a garden when they sware that they would surely reap it in the morning. (17) and they added not the saving words. (18) So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep. (19) And it became as though reaped. (20) As the morning broke, they called out, one to another,- (21) "If you want to gather the fruits, let us go early to the plantation." (22) So they went off, saying one unto another in low tones: (23) Let there not enter upon you today any needy man. (24) And they left at early morn, assuming they were in control of their purpose. (25) But when they saw the (garden), they said: "We have surely lost our way: (26) Nay! we are made to suffer privation. (27) Said the most moderate of them, 'Did I not say to you, "Why do you not give glory?"' (28) They answered: "Limitless in His glory is our Sustainer! Verily, we were doing wrong!" (29) Then they began to reproach one another. (30) They said: woe unto us! verily we! we have been arrogant. (31) We hope that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this. Truly, we turn to our Lord (wishing for good that He may forgive our sins, and reward us in the Hereafter)." (32) Such is the torment. And the torment of the Hereafter is far greater; if they but knew. (33)
