The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen, and all that they write! (1) Thou art not, by thy Sustainer's grace, a madman! (2) And verily, thine shall be a reward neverending (3) And thou (standest) on an exalted standard of character. (4) Soon you will see, as will they, (5) Which of you is the demented. (6) Indeed, your Lord knows very well those who strayed from His Path, and those who are guided. (7) So do not yield to the rejecters. (8) They wish that you should compromise (in religion out of courtesy) with them, so they (too) would compromise with you. (9) Nor ever listen to any excessive oath maker, ignoble person. (10) Defamer, going about with slander (11) Hinderer of the good, transgressor, malefactor (12) Crude, and above all, mean and infamous, (13) just because he has wealth and sons, (14) that, whenever Our messages are conveyed to him, such a one says, "Fables of ancient times"? (15) We will brand him upon the snout. (16) We have tested them in the same way as we tested the dwellers of the garden (in Yemen) when they swore to pluck all the fruits of the garden in the morning, (17) without adding ("if God wills"). (18) Then there encompassed it a visitation from your Lord while they were sleeping. (19) and in the morning it was as if it were a garden plucked. (20) In the morning they called to one another, (21) That, “Go to your fields at early morn, if you want to harvest.” (22) So they set out, while lowering their voices, (23) Saying: No poor man shall enter it today upon you. (24) and early they went, strongly bent upon their purpose. (25) Then when they saw it, they said, “We have indeed strayed.” (26) Aye! it is we who are deprived! (27) The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?' " (28) They said: "Glory to Our Lord! Verily, we have been Zalimun (wrong-doers, etc.)." (29) Then they began to reproach one another. (30) They said, "Alas for us, our behaviour was beyond the pale. (31) It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better than it; to our Lord we humbly turn.' (32) Such was their punishment. But the punishment of the Everlasting Life is much greater, if they but knew. (33)
