The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Nun. By the pen and what the scribes write. (1) Thou art not, through the grace of thy Lord, mad. (2) And verily thine shall be a hire unending. (3) for, behold, thou keepest indeed to a sublime way of life; (4) You will see and they will also see (5) which of you was bereft of reason. (6) Indeed your Lord well knows those who have strayed from His path, and He well knows those who are upon guidance. (7) Therefore do not listen to the deniers. (8) Who would have had thee compromise, that they may compromise. (9) Nor ever listen to any excessive oath maker, ignoble person. (10) The excessively insulting one, spreader of spite. (11) Hinderer of the good, trespasser; sinner. (12) moreover ignoble, (13) It is because he is possessed of wealth and children (14) When Our signs are recited to him, he says, 'Fairy-tales of the ancients!' (15) Soon shall We brand him on his snout. (16) Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning (17) without saying, "If it be God's will." (18) Then a calamity from your Lord fell upon it, but they remained fast asleep. (19) So it became as black, barren land. (20) In the morning they called out to one another, (21) Saying: "Go to your tilth in the morning, if you would pluck the fruits." (22) So they departed, conversing in secret low tones (saying), (23) "Be sure to stop any poor person from entering the orchard today." (24) And they went out early, determined in their resolve. (25) Then when they saw it, they said, “We have indeed strayed.” (26) rather, we are utterly ruined.” (27) Said the most moderate of them, 'Did I not say to you, "Why do you not give glory?"' (28) They said, 'Glory be to God, our Lord; truly, we were evildoers.' (29) Then they began to heap reproaches on each other. (30) They said, “Woe to us we were indeed rebellious.” (31) [But] it may be that our Sustainer will grant us something better instead: for, verily, unto our Sustainer do we turn with hope!" (32) Such is the chastisement; and the chastisement of the Hereafter is assuredly even greater, if only they knew. (33)
