The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and that which they write (therewith), (1) Thou art not, through the grace of thy Lord, mad. (2) Surely thou shalt have a wage unfailing; (3) Surely, you (Prophet Muhammad) are of a great morality. (4) and [one day] thou shalt see, and they [who now deride thee] shall see, (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Verily, thy Sustainer alone is fully aware as to who has strayed from His path, Just as He alone is fully aware of those who have found the right way. (7) Then do not obey the deniers. (8) They only want that you should relent, so that they may come to terms. (9) Do not heed a contemptible swearer, (10) A defamer, spreader abroad of slander. (11) [or] the withholder of good, [or] the sinful aggressor, (12) ill-mannered, and moraly corrupt (13) because he has wealth and sons. (14) When Our signs are recited to him, he says, 'Fairy-tales of the ancients!' (15) We shall brand him on the nose. (16) We have tried them as we tried the owners of a certain orchard, who vowed to harvest all its fruits the next morning, (17) But made no reservation, ("If it be Allah's Will"). (18) A visitor from your Lord circled around the garden during the night while they were asleep (19) So in the morning it became as if harvested. (20) (Then) in the morning they called out to one another, saying: (21) [Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit." (22) So they departed, whispering together, (23) "Be sure to stop any poor person from entering the orchard today." (24) And they went out betimes determined in purpose. (25) But as soon as they beheld the orchard, (they cried out): “We have certainly lost the way; (26) “In fact, we are unfortunate.” (27) (Whereupon) the best among them said: 'Did I not say to you to exalt (Allah)' (28) They said: hallowed be Our Lord! verily we have been wrong-doers. (29) Then they began to heap reproaches on each other. (30) They said: “Woe to us! We had indeed transgressed. (31) Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous." (32) Such is the torment if only they knew that the torment in the life hereafter will certainly be greater. (33)
