The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and by that which they inscribe. (1) Thou art not, by the Grace of thy Lord, mad or possessed. (2) Surely thou shalt have a wage unfailing; (3) And thou (standest) on an exalted standard of character. (4) So you will soon see, and they too will see, (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Indeed your Lord well knows those who have strayed from His path, and He well knows those who are upon guidance. (7) So do not yield to the rejecters. (8) They wish that thou shouldst compromise, then they would compromise. (9) And obey thou not every mean swearer, (10) or to any defamer or one who spreads slander, (11) Hinderer of the good, transgressor, sinful, (12) the coarse-grained, and above all mean and ignoble; (13) Because he possesses wealth and (numerous) sons. (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says: 'They are but fairytales of the ancients' (15) Soon We will brand him on the nose. (16) Verily We! We have proved them even as We proved the fellows of a garden when they sware that they would surely reap it in the morning. (17) And made no exception (for the Will of Allah); (18) Then a visitation from thy Lord came upon it while they slept (19) So in the morning it became as if harvested. (20) In the morning they called out to one another, (21) saying, "Be quick to reach your orchard, if you want to gather all your fruits." (22) So they set out, while lowering their voices, (23) No Miskin (poor man) shall enter upon you into it today. (24) And they went forth early, determined upon their purpose. (25) When they saw the garden, they said, "Surely we have lost our way. (26) Indeed, we are utterly ruined!" (27) The best among them said: Said I not unto you: Why glorify ye not (Allah)? (28) They said, “Purity is to our Lord we have indeed been unjust.” (29) Then they turned, one against another, in blaming. (30) They said, "Alas for us, our behaviour was beyond the pale. (31) "It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this: for we do turn to Him (in repentance)!" (32) Such is the Punishment (in this life); but greater is the Punishment in the Hereafter,- if only they knew! (33)
