The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ Nun. [These letters (Nun, etc.) are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. By the pen and what the (angels) write (in the Records of men). (1) (Muhammad), you are not insane, thanks to the bounty of your Lord. (2) And most surely you shall have a reward never to be cut off. (3) for, behold, thou keepest indeed to a sublime way of life; (4) So you will soon see, and they too will see, (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Indeed your Lord well knows those who have strayed from His path, and He well knows those who are upon guidance. (7) Therefore, do not obey those who belie, (8) They wish that you should compromise (in religion out of courtesy) with them, so they (too) would compromise with you. (9) Heed not the type of despicable men,- ready with oaths, (10) or to any defamer or one who spreads slander, (11) obstructing virtues, a sinful transgressor, (12) Gross, and therewithal ignoble. (13) just because he has wealth and sons, (14) and whenever Our verses are rehearsed to him, he says: “These are fairy- tales of times gone by.” (15) [For this] We shall brand him with indelible disgrace! (16) Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning (17) And they made not the exception. (18) Then a visitation from thy Lord came upon it while they slept (19) and in the morning it was if the garden had been reaped. (20) At daybreak they called out to one another: (21) Saying: Go early to your tilth if you would cut (the produce). (22) So they departed, talking in low voices: (23) [Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person." (24) And they left at early morn, assuming they were in control of their purpose. (25) When they saw (and did not recognise it) they said: "Surely we have lost the way. (26) “In fact, we are unfortunate.” (27) One who was temperate among them, said: "Did I not say: 'Why don't you priase God?'" (28) They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers." (29) Then they turned, one against another, in reproach. (30) They said, “Woe to us we were indeed rebellious.” (31) Belike our Lord may exchange for us better garden than this; verily we are unto our Lord beseechers. (32) Such is the Punishment (in this life); but greater is the Punishment in the Hereafter,- if only they knew! (33)
