The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the Pen and the (Record) which (men) write,- (1) You are not insane, by the munificence of your Lord. (2) And verily thine shall be a hire unending. (3) And lo! thou art of a tremendous nature. (4) You shall see and they will see (5) which of you is a prey to madness. (6) Indeed, your Lord knows very well those who strayed from His Path, and those who are guided. (7) So do not yield to the rejecters. (8) They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you]. (9) And do not obey every mean swearer, (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) Hinderer of the good, trespasser; sinner. (12) who is ignoble and besides all that, base-born; (13) Because he* has some wealth and sons. (Walid bin Mugaira, who cursed the Holy Prophet.) (14) When Our revelations are rehearsed unto him, he saith: fables of the ancients. (15) Soon We will brand him on the nose. (16) We have put them [i.e., the Makkans] to test even as We put to test the owners of the orchard when they vowed that they would gather the fruit of their orchard in the morning, (17) And made no exception (for the Will of Allah); (18) So an envoy from your Lord completed his round upon the garden, whilst they were sleeping. (19) And by morning it lay as if it had already been harvested, a barren land. (20) And they called one another at morning, (21) “Hurry to your orchard if you would gather its fruit.” (22) So they went, while they consulted together secretly, (23) "Indeed, no needy person shall enter it today [and come] upon you [unawares,]" (24) They set out early in the morning, thinking they had the power to prevent. (25) But when they saw it, they said: Most surely we have gone astray (26) nay, rather we have been robbed!' (27) One who was temperate among them, said: "Did I not say: 'Why don't you priase God?'" (28) They said: hallowed be Our Lord! verily we have been wrong-doers. (29) Then some of them drew near unto others, self-reproaching. (30) Saying: "Alas the woe, we were iniquitous. (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than this in place thereof. Lo! we beseech our Lord. (32) Such is the chastisement, and certainly the chastisement of the hereafter is greater, did they but know! (33)
