The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Nun. By the Pen, and what they inscribe, (1) thou art not, by the blessing of thy Lord, a man possessed. (2) and surely yours shall be a never-ending reward, (3) And thou (standest) on an exalted standard of character. (4) You will see and they will also see (5) Who is distracted. (6) Verily, your Lord knows better, who (among men) has gone astray from His Path, and He knows better those who are guided. (7) So do not comply with those who deny: (8) They wish that you should be pliant so they (too) would be pliant. (9) Do not yield to one persistent in swearing, (10) backbiter, going about with slander, (11) Forbidder of good, outstepping the limits, sinful, (12) Cruel, after all that base-born (of illegitimate birth), (13) (who so acts) simply because he has wealth and sons, (14) and whenever Our verses are rehearsed to him, he says: “These are fairy- tales of times gone by.” (15) We shall brand him over the nose! (16) We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden who had sworn that in the morning they would reap it, (17) But did not add: "If God may please." (18) A visitor from your Lord circled around the garden during the night while they were asleep (19) And in the morning it was as if plucked. (20) And they called out to each other in the morning, (21) "Go early to your tilth if you want to harvest the fruit!" (22) So they departed, conversing in secret low tones, (saying)- (23) “No destitute person shall enter it today.” (24) And they went forth early, determined upon their purpose. (25) But when they saw the (garden), they said: "We have surely lost our way: (26) rather, we are utterly ruined.” (27) The best among them said: “Did I not say to you: why do you not give glory to (your Lord)?” (28) They said, “Purity is to our Lord we have indeed been unjust.” (29) Some of them started to blame others. (30) They said: “Woe to us! We had indeed transgressed. (31) [But] it may be that our Sustainer will grant us something better instead: for, verily, unto our Sustainer do we turn with hope!" (32) Such is Our chastisement; and the punishment of the Hereafter will be greater, if only they knew! (33)
