The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and what the scribes write. (1) (Muhammad), you are not insane, thanks to the bounty of your Lord. (2) And lo! thine verily will be a reward unfailing. (3) and you are certainly on the most exalted standard of moral excellence. (4) You shall see and they will see (5) which of you is a prey to madness. (6) Surely your Lord knows well those who have strayed from His Way just as He knows well those who are on the Right Way. (7) Hence, defer not to [the likes and dislikes of] those who give the lie to the truth: (8) Their desire is that thou shouldst be pliant: so would they be pliant. (9) Do not yield to one persistent in swearing, (10) Or backbiter, calumniator, slanderer, (11) Who hinders men from (doing) good, the transgressor, the iniquitous, (12) ill-mannered, and moraly corrupt (13) Is it because he is possessed of worldly goods and children (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples." (15) We shall brand him over the nose! (16) Lo! We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed that they would pluck its fruit next morning, (17) and made no allowance [for the will of God]: (18) Wherefore an encircling visitation visited it even as they slept on. (19) so that by the morrow it became barren and bleak. (20) At daybreak they called to each other: (21) saying, "Be quick to reach your orchard, if you want to gather all your fruits." (22) So they departed, conversing in secret low tones (saying), (23) Let there not enter upon you today any needy man. (24) And they went out betimes determined in purpose. (25) Then when they beheld it, they said: verily we have strayed. (26) “In fact, we are unfortunate.” (27) The most moderate of them said: said I not unto you, wherefore hallow him ye not! (28) 'Exaltations to Allah, our Lord' they said, 'We were truly harmdoers' (29) And they advanced one upon another, blaming each other. (30) They said: Alas for us! In truth we were outrageous. (31) [But] it may be that our Sustainer will grant us something better instead: for, verily, unto our Sustainer do we turn with hope!" (32) Such is the Punishment (in this life); but greater is the Punishment in the Hereafter,- if only they knew! (33)
