The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Noon. I swear by the pen and what the angels write, (1) You (O Muhammad SAW) are not, by the Grace of your Lord, a madman. (2) And verily, thine shall be a reward neverending (3) For you are truly of a sublime character. (4) You will see and they will also see (5) which of you has been afflicted by insanity. (6) Verily thy Lord! He is the best Knower of him who strayeth from His path, and He is the best Knower of the guided one. (7) Hence, defer not to [the likes and dislikes of] those who give the lie to the truth: (8) They only want that you should relent, so that they may come to terms. (9) And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer (10) back-biting, gossiping, (11) A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful, (12) Violent (and cruel),- with all that, base-born,- (13) because he has wealth and sons. (14) When Our Verses (of the Quran) are recited to him, he says: "Tales of the men of old!" (15) We shall brand him on his nose. (16) Verily We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they resolved to gather the fruits of the (garden) in the morning. (17) and made no allowance [for the will of God]: (18) Then, a visitation from your Lord came down upon it while they slept, (19) And in the morning it was as if plucked. (20) In the morning they called to one another, (21) Saying: "Go to your tilth in the morning, if you would pluck the fruits." (22) And so they departed, whispering to one another: (23) "Indeed, no needy person shall enter it today [and come] upon you [unawares,]" (24) And they went in the morning with strong intention, thinking that they have power (to prevent the poor taking anything of the fruits therefrom). (25) But when they saw it they said: 'We have surely gone astray. (26) nay, rather we have been robbed!' (27) The best among them said, “Did I not tell you, ‘Why do you not proclaim His purity?’” (28) "Glory to our Lord," they said; we were really in the wrong." (29) Then they began to heap reproaches on each other. (30) They said: "Woe to us! Verily, we were Taghun (transgressors and disobedient, etc.) (31) It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better than it; to our Lord we humbly turn.' (32) Such is the chastisement, and certainly the chastisement of the hereafter is greater, did they but know! (33)
