The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nuun* by oath of the pen and by oath of what is written by it. (Alphabet of the Arabic language; Allah and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) (1) By the grace of your Lord, you are not a mad man. (2) And lo! thine verily will be a reward unfailing. (3) And lo! thou art of a tremendous nature. (4) So thou shalt see, and they will see, (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Surely your Lord knows well those who have strayed from His Way just as He knows well those who are on the Right Way. (7) So (O Muhammad SAW) obey not the deniers [(of Islamic Monotheism those who belie the Verses of Allah), the Oneness of Allah, and the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad SAW), etc.] (8) They wish that you should compromise (in religion out of courtesy) with them, so they (too) would compromise with you. (9) Do not yield to any contemptible swearer of oaths, (10) Or backbiter, calumniator, slanderer, (11) Hinderer of the good, transgressor, sinful, (12) Crude, and above all, mean and infamous, (13) Is it because he is possessed of worldly goods and children (14) When you recite Our revelations to him, he says: "These are fables of long ago." (15) We will brand him on the nose. (16) We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden who had sworn that in the morning they would reap it, (17) But made no reservation, ("If it be Allah's Will"). (18) Then there encompassed it a visitation from your Lord while they were sleeping. (19) and the garden was turned into a barren desert. (20) At daybreak they called to each other: (21) “Hurry to your orchard if you would gather its fruit.” (22) So they departed, conversing in secret low tones (saying), (23) Saying: No poor man shall enter it today upon you. (24) And they went out betimes determined in purpose. (25) But when they saw it, they said: Most surely we have gone astray (26) Nay! we are made to suffer privation. (27) (Whereupon) the best among them said: 'Did I not say to you to exalt (Allah)' (28) They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers." (29) Then they began to reproach one another. (30) [In the end] they said: "Oh, woe unto us! Verily, we did behave outrageously! (31) Maybe, our Lord will give us instead one better than it; surely to our Lord do we make our humble petition. (32) Such was their punishment, [in this life]. But the punishment of the life to come is much more severe, if only they knew it! (33)
