The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nuun* by oath of the pen and by oath of what is written by it. (Alphabet of the Arabic language; Allah and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) (1) By your Lord's Grace, you are not afflicted with madness, (2) And verily, thine shall be a reward neverending (3) And indeed, you are of a great moral character. (4) You will see, and they will see, (5) #NAME? (6) Your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His path and who is rightly guided. (7) So hearken not to those who deny (the Truth). (8) they would wish you to be pliant so that they too may be pliant. (9) And do not obey every mean swearer, (10) Defamer, going about with slander (11) [or] the withholder of good, [or] the sinful aggressor, (12) Cruel, after all that base-born (of illegitimate birth), (13) because he has wealth and sons. (14) that, whenever Our messages are conveyed to him, such a one says, "Fables of ancient times"? (15) Soon We will brand him on the nose. (16) Verily, We have tried them as We tried the people of the garden, when they swore to pluck the fruits of the (garden) in the morning, (17) Without making exception. (18) A calamity from your Lord befell the orchard as they slept. (19) And it became as though reaped. (20) At daybreak they called to each other: (21) Saying: Go early to your tilth if you would cut (the produce). (22) So they set out, while lowering their voices, (23) 'No needy person shall set foot in it today' (24) They went forth early, believing that they had the power (to gather the fruit). (25) When they saw (and did not recognise it) they said: "Surely we have lost the way. (26) Rather, we have been deprived." (27) Said one of them, more just (than the rest): "Did I not say to you, 'Why not glorify (Allah)?'" (28) They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers." (29) and then they turned upon one another with mutual reproaches. (30) Said they: O woe to us! surely we were inordinate: (31) Maybe, our Lord will give us instead one better than it; surely to our Lord do we make our humble petition. (32) Such is the torment if only they knew that the torment in the life hereafter will certainly be greater. (33)
