The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ Nuun* by oath of the pen and by oath of what is written by it. (Alphabet of the Arabic language; Allah and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) (1) You (O Muhammad SAW) are not, by the Grace of your Lord, a madman. (2) Most surely, you will have a never ending reward. (3) For you are verily born of sublime nature. (4) So you will see, and they will realise, (5) Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil]. (6) Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided. (7) So do not yield to the rejecters. (8) Their desire is that thou shouldst be pliant: so would they be pliant. (9) Heed not the type of despicable men,- ready with oaths, (10) backbiter, going about with slander, (11) (Habitually) hindering (all) good, transgressing beyond bounds, deep in sin, (12) the coarse-grained, and above all mean and ignoble; (13) Simply because he possesses wealth and children. (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples." (15) We will brand him upon the snout. (16) We have indeed tested them the way We had tested the owners of the garden when they swore that they would reap its harvest the next morning. (17) and made no allowance [for the will of God]: (18) Thereupon a calamity from your Lord passed over it while they were asleep, (19) Then in the morning it became as though it had been reaped. (20) In the morning they called to one another, (21) “Hurry to your orchard if you would gather its fruit.” (22) So they went off, saying one unto another in low tones: (23) "Let no needy person come to you within it today." (24) And they went in the morning with strong intention, thinking that they have power (to prevent the poor taking anything of the fruits therefrom). (25) But as soon as they beheld [the garden and could not recognize] it, they exclaimed, "Surely we have lost our way!" (26) (Then they said): "Nay! Indeed we are deprived of (the fruits)!" (27) The best among them said, “Did I not tell you, ‘Why do you not proclaim His purity?’” (28) They said: hallowed be Our Lord! verily we have been wrong-doers. (29) and then they turned upon one another with mutual reproaches. (30) They said: woe unto us! verily we! we have been arrogant. (31) It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better than it; to our Lord we humbly turn.' (32) Such is the punishment (in this life), but truly, the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they but knew. (33)
