The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nuun* by oath of the pen and by oath of what is written by it. (Alphabet of the Arabic language; Allah and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) (1) You are not demented by the grace of your Lord. (2) And indeed for you is an unlimited reward. (3) And lo! thou art of a tremendous nature. (4) You will see, and they will see, (5) Which of you is the demented. (6) Verily it is thy Lord that knoweth best, which (among men) hath strayed from His Path: and He knoweth best those who receive (true) Guidance. (7) Wherefore obey not thou the beliers. (8) They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you]. (9) Furthermore, defer not to the contemptible swearer of oaths, (10) A defamer, spreader abroad of slander. (11) [or] the withholder of good, [or] the sinful aggressor, (12) Foul mouthed, and in addition to all this, of improper lineage. (13) Is it because he is possessed of worldly goods and children (14) When Our Verses (of the Quran) are recited to him, he says: "Tales of the men of old!" (15) [For this] We shall brand him with indelible disgrace! (16) We have tried you as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed to gather the fruits in the morning (17) Without making exception. (18) So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep. (19) And by morning it lay as if it had already been harvested, a barren land. (20) And they cried out one unto another in the morning, (21) “Hurry to your orchard if you would gather its fruit.” (22) Thus they launched forth, whispering unto one another, (23) 'No needy person shall set foot in it today' (24) And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able. (25) Then when they beheld it, they said: verily we have strayed. (26) No. In fact we have been deprived of it." (27) Said one of them, more just (than the rest): "Did I not say to you, 'Why not glorify (Allah)?'" (28) They said: hallowed be Our Lord! verily we have been wrong-doers. (29) and then they turned upon one another with mutual reproaches. (30) They said: “Woe to us! We had indeed transgressed. (31) Perhaps our Lord will replace it with a better garden. We turn in repentance to our Lord". (32) Such is the punishment; and indeed the punishment of the Hereafter is the greatest, if only they knew! (33)
