The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the Pen and the (Record) which (men) write,- (1) By the grace of your Lord, you are not a mad man. (2) And most surely you shall have a reward never to be cut off. (3) Surely, you (Prophet Muhammad) are of a great morality. (4) So very soon, you will see and they too will realise (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Surely your Lord knows well those who have strayed from His Way just as He knows well those who are on the Right Way. (7) Therefore do not listen to the deniers. (8) They want you to make concessions to them and then they will reciprocate. (9) And do not yield to any contemptible swearer, (10) [And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip - (11) obstructing virtues, a sinful transgressor, (12) Greedy therewithal, intrusive. (13) Because he possesses wealth and (numerous) sons. (14) When to him are rehearsed Our Signs, "Tales of the ancients", he cries! (15) We will soon singe his pig-nose. (16) Verily We! We have proved them even as We proved the fellows of a garden when they sware that they would surely reap it in the morning. (17) without making any allowance (for the will of Allah). (18) Then there encompassed it a visitation from your Lord while they were sleeping. (19) And it became as though reaped. (20) So they called out to each other at the break of dawn, (21) "Go ye to your tilth (betimes) in the morning, if ye would gather the fruits." (22) So off they went, whispering to one another: (23) No Miskin (poor man) shall enter upon you into it today. (24) They went forth early, believing that they had the power (to gather the fruit). (25) But when they saw it they said: 'We have surely gone astray. (26) (Then they said): "Nay! Indeed we are deprived of (the fruits)!" (27) The best among them said, “Did I not tell you, ‘Why do you not proclaim His purity?’” (28) They said, "Glory be to God, our Lord. We have surely done wrong." (29) Then they began to reproach one another. (30) Said they: O woe to us! surely we were inordinate: (31) Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous." (32) Such is the chastisement, and certainly the chastisement of the hereafter is greater, did they but know! (33)
