The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen, and all that they write! (1) By the grace of your Lord, you are not a mad man. (2) Surely thou shalt have a wage unfailing; (3) And lo! thou art of a tremendous nature. (4) and [one day] thou shalt see, and they [who now deride thee] shall see, (5) which of you has been afflicted by insanity. (6) Your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His path and who is rightly guided. (7) Wherefore obey not thou the beliers. (8) They only want that you should relent, so that they may come to terms. (9) And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer (10) backbiter, going about with slander, (11) [or] the withholder of good, [or] the sinful aggressor, (12) the coarse-grained, and above all mean and ignoble; (13) Because he possesses wealth and sons. (14) When Our signs are recited to him, he says, 'Fairy-tales of the ancients!' (15) We will brand him upon the snout. (16) Lo! We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed that they would pluck its fruit next morning, (17) and they added not the saving words. (18) Then there passed by on the (garden) something (fire) from your Lord at night and burnt it while they were asleep. (19) So it became as black, barren land. (20) (Then) in the morning they called out to one another, saying: (21) [Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit." (22) So they departed, conversing in secret low tones, (saying)- (23) 'No needy man shall enter it today against your will.' (24) And they went in the morning with strong intention, thinking that they have power (to prevent the poor taking anything of the fruits therefrom). (25) But when they saw the (garden), they said: "Verily, we have gone astray," (26) Nay! we are made to suffer privation. (27) The best among them said: Said I not unto you: Why glorify ye not (Allah)? (28) They cried out: “Glory be to our Lord! Certainly we were sinners.” (29) Then they turned, one against another, in reproach. (30) They said: "Alas for us! We have indeed transgressed! (31) Maybe our Lord will give us a better orchard in its place; to our Lord do we penitently turn.” (32) Such is the torment if only they knew that the torment in the life hereafter will certainly be greater. (33)
