The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and by that which they inscribe. (1) Thou art not, by thy Sustainer's grace, a madman! (2) Most surely, you will have a never ending reward. (3) And verily thou art of a high and noble disposition. (4) And thou wilt see and they will see (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Indeed your Lord well knows those who have strayed from His path, and He well knows those who are upon guidance. (7) So hearken not to those who deny (the Truth). (8) Their desire is that thou shouldst be pliant: so would they be pliant. (9) And do not obey every mean swearer, (10) the fault-finder who goes around slandering, (11) Forbidder of good, outstepping the limits, sinful, (12) Ignoble, besides all that, base-born; (13) because he has wealth and sons. (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “These are stories of earlier people.” (15) We shall brand him on the muzzle. (16) Now We have tried them, even as We tried the owners of the garden when they swore they would pluck in the morning (17) And were not willing to set aside a portion (for the poor). (18) Then there passed by on the (garden) something (fire) from your Lord at night and burnt it while they were asleep. (19) Then in the morning it became as though it had been reaped. (20) At daybreak they called to each other: (21) 'Come forth betimes upon your tillage, if you would pluck!' (22) So they went off, whispering to one another, (23) "Be sure to stop any poor person from entering the orchard today." (24) and early they went, strongly bent upon their purpose. (25) But when they saw it, they said: Most surely we have gone astray (26) Nay, but we are desolate! (27) The most moderate of them said: said I not unto you, wherefore hallow him ye not! (28) They answered: "Limitless in His glory is our Sustainer! Verily, we were doing wrong!" (29) Then they approached one another, blaming each other. (30) They said, "Woe to us. We have been arrogant. (31) Perhaps our Lord will replace it with a better garden. We turn in repentance to our Lord". (32) Such is the punishment; and indeed the punishment of the Hereafter is the greatest, if only they knew! (33)
