The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the Pen, and what they inscribe, (1) You (O Muhammad SAW) are not, by the Grace of your Lord, a madman. (2) And most surely you shall have a reward never to be cut off. (3) And verily, you (O Muhammad SAW) are on an exalted standard of character. (4) Soon wilt thou see, and they will see, (5) which of you was bereft of reason. (6) Surely thy Lord knows very well those who have gone astray from His way, and He knows very well those who are guided. (7) So hearken not to those who deny (the Truth). (8) Their desire is that thou shouldst be pliant: so would they be pliant. (9) And do not obey every mean swearer, (10) The excessively insulting one, spreader of spite. (11) Hinderer of the good, transgressor, malefactor (12) [or] one who is cruel, by greed possessed, and in addition to all this, utterly useless [to his fellow-men]. (13) (He was so) because he had wealth and children. (14) When Our signs are recited to him, he says, 'Fairy-tales of the ancients!' (15) Soon We will brand him on the nose. (16) Verily, We have tried them as We tried the people of the garden, when they swore to pluck the fruits of the (garden) in the morning, (17) without saying, "If it be God's will." (18) Then there came on the (garden) a visitation from thy Lord, (which swept away) all around, while they were asleep. (19) and so by morning the orchard lay as though it had been fully harvested. (20) And they called one another at morning, (21) saying, "Be quick to reach your orchard, if you want to gather all your fruits." (22) So they went off, whispering to one another, (23) “No destitute person shall enter it today.” (24) And they left at early morn, assuming they were in control of their purpose. (25) When they saw the garden, they said, "Surely we have lost our way. (26) No. In fact we have been deprived of it." (27) Said the most right-minded among them: "Did I not tell you, 'Will you not extol God's limitless glory?'" (28) They said: Glory be to our Lord, surely we were unjust. (29) Then they turned, one against another, in blaming. (30) They said: Alas for us! In truth we were outrageous. (31) Perhaps our Lord will replace it with a better garden. We turn in repentance to our Lord". (32) Such was the punishment. And verily the punishment of the Hereafter is greater if they did but know. (33)
