The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Nun. CONSIDER the pen, and all that they write [therewith]! (1) thou art not, by the blessing of thy Lord, a man possessed. (2) and surely yours shall be a never-ending reward, (3) And verily thou art of a high and noble disposition. (4) Soon you will see, as will they, (5) Which of you is the demented. (6) Verily it is thy Lord that knoweth best, which (among men) hath strayed from His Path: and He knoweth best those who receive (true) Guidance. (7) Therefor obey not thou the rejecters (8) They wish that you should compromise (in religion out of courtesy) with them, so they (too) would compromise with you. (9) Do not yield to any contemptible swearer of oaths, (10) or to any defamer or one who spreads slander, (11) Who hinders men from (doing) good, the transgressor, the iniquitous, (12) [or] one who is cruel, by greed possessed, and in addition to all this, utterly useless [to his fellow-men]. (13) (who so acts) simply because he has wealth and sons, (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says: 'They are but fairytales of the ancients' (15) Soon shall We brand him on his snout. (16) Verily We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they resolved to gather the fruits of the (garden) in the morning. (17) And were not willing to set aside a portion (for the poor). (18) Then a calamity from your Lord fell upon it, but they remained fast asleep. (19) So by the morning it seemed as though picked clean. (20) Now when they rose at early morn, they called unto one another, (21) 'Come forth betimes upon your tillage, if you would pluck!' (22) So off they went, whispering to one another: (23) 'No needy person shall set foot in it today' (24) And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able. (25) But when they saw it they said: 'We have surely gone astray. (26) Indeed, we are utterly ruined!" (27) The best of them said: Did I not say to you, Why do you not glorify (Allah)? (28) They cried out: “Glory be to our Lord! Certainly we were sinners.” (29) So they came towards each other, blaming. (30) [In the end] they said: "Oh, woe unto us! Verily, we did behave outrageously! (31) It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better than it; to our Lord we humbly turn.' (32) Such is Our chastisement; and the punishment of the Hereafter will be greater, if only they knew! (33)
