The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the Pen and the (Record) which (men) write,- (1) You (O Muhammad SAW) are not, by the Grace of your Lord, a madman. (2) Surely thou shalt have a wage unfailing; (3) And lo! thou art of a tremendous nature. (4) Soon wilt thou see, and they will see, (5) which of you is the demented. (6) Verily thy Lord! He is the best Knower of him who strayeth from His path, and He is the best Knower of the guided one. (7) So hearken not to those who deny (the Truth). (8) They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you]. (9) Do not yield to one persistent in swearing, (10) Detracter, spreader abroad of slanders, (11) those who hinder good, the guilty aggressor, (12) Ignoble, besides all that, base-born; (13) Is it because he is possessed of worldly goods and children (14) When Our signs are recited to him, he says, 'Fairy-tales of the ancients!' (15) Soon shall We brand (the beast) on the snout! (16) Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning (17) And were not willing to set aside a portion (for the poor). (18) A visitor from your Lord circled around the garden during the night while they were asleep (19) and so by morning the orchard lay as though it had been fully harvested. (20) At daybreak they called to each other: (21) Saying: go out betimes to your tilth if ye would reap. (22) So they departed, talking in low voices: (23) 'No needy man shall enter it today against your will.' (24) And they opened the morning, strong in an (unjust) resolve. (25) But as soon as they beheld the orchard, (they cried out): “We have certainly lost the way; (26) Nay, but we are desolate! (27) The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?' " (28) They said: "Glory to Our Lord! Verily, we have been Zalimun (wrong-doers, etc.)." (29) Then some of them advanced against others, blaming each other. (30) They said, 'Woe, alas for us! Truly, we were insolent. (31) "It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this: for we do turn to Him (in repentance)!" (32) Such was their punishment. But the punishment of the Everlasting Life is much greater, if they but knew. (33)
