The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. CONSIDER the pen, and all that they write [therewith]! (1) Thou art not, for thy Lord's favour unto thee, a madman. (2) and surely yours shall be a never-ending reward, (3) for, behold, thou keepest indeed to a sublime way of life; (4) You will see and they will also see (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Verily it is thy Lord that knoweth best, which (among men) hath strayed from His Path: and He knoweth best those who receive (true) Guidance. (7) So do not yield to the rejecters. (8) They wish that you should compromise (in religion out of courtesy) with them, so they (too) would compromise with you. (9) Do not yield to one persistent in swearing, (10) The excessively insulting one, spreader of spite. (11) hinderer of good, guilty aggressor, coarse-grained, (12) Crude, and above all, mean and infamous, (13) Simply because he possesses wealth and children. (14) When Our revelations are recited to him, he says, "These are ancient legends". (15) Soon We will brand him on the nose. (16) We have put them [i.e., the Makkans] to test even as We put to test the owners of the orchard when they vowed that they would gather the fruit of their orchard in the morning, (17) And were not willing to set aside a portion (for the poor). (18) whereupon a visitation for thy Sustainer came upon that [garden] while they were asleep, (19) So in the morning it became as if harvested. (20) And they called one another at morning, (21) "If you want to gather the fruits, let us go early to the plantation." (22) So they went, while they consulted together secretly, (23) No Miskin (poor man) shall enter upon you into it today. (24) They set out early in the morning, thinking they had the power to prevent. (25) But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost; (26) (No, we are not lost.) In fact, we have been deprived of everything". (27) The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?' " (28) They said: Glory be to our Lord, surely we were unjust. (29) And they came blaming one another. (30) They said, 'Woe, alas for us! Truly, we were insolent. (31) Belike our Lord may exchange for us better garden than this; verily we are unto our Lord beseechers. (32) Such is the punishment; and indeed the punishment of the Hereafter is the greatest, if only they knew! (33)
