The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ Noon. By the Pen and that (the angels) write, (1) Thou art not, through the grace of thy Lord, mad. (2) And lo! thine verily will be a reward unfailing. (3) And thou (standest) on an exalted standard of character. (4) and [one day] thou shalt see, and they [who now deride thee] shall see, (5) Who is distracted. (6) Surely your Lord knows well those who have strayed from His Way just as He knows well those who are on the Right Way. (7) So hearken not to those who deny (the Truth). (8) They wish that in some way you may yield, so they too might soften their stand. (9) Neither obey thou each feeble oath-monger, (10) [And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip - (11) the hinderer of good, the transgressor, the sinful; (12) ill-mannered, and moraly corrupt (13) or that because he may possess wealth and children. (14) when Our revelations are recited to him, he says, "These are just ancient fables." (15) We shall brand him on his nose. (16) We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden who had sworn that in the morning they would reap it, (17) without adding ("if God wills"). (18) So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep. (19) And in the morning it was as if plucked. (20) Then they cried out unto each other in the morning. (21) 'Come forth betimes upon your tillage, if you would pluck!' (22) So they set out, while lowering their voices, (23) No needy man shall enter it to-day against you. (24) They set out early in the morning, thinking they had the power to prevent. (25) But when they saw it, they said, "We must have lost our way. (26) No. In fact we have been deprived of it." (27) Said the most moderate of them, 'Did I not say to you, "Why do you not give glory?"' (28) They said: Glory be to our Lord, surely we were unjust. (29) So they came towards each other, blaming. (30) Said they: O woe to us! surely we were inordinate: (31) [But] it may be that our Sustainer will grant us something better instead: for, verily, unto our Sustainer do we turn with hope!" (32) Such is the punishment (in this life), but truly, the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they but knew. (33)
