The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and by what you write, (1) By the grace of your Lord, you are not a mad man. (2) Indeed, there is an unfailing wage for you. (3) And verily, you (O Muhammad SAW) are on an exalted standard of character. (4) Soon you will see, as will they, (5) Which of you is the demented. (6) Surely your Lord knows well those who have strayed from His Way just as He knows well those who are on the Right Way. (7) Then do not obey the deniers. (8) They wish that you should compromise (in religion out of courtesy) with them, so they (too) would compromise with you. (9) Heed not the type of despicable men,- ready with oaths, (10) back-biting, gossiping, (11) obstructing virtues, a sinful transgressor, (12) ill-mannered, and moraly corrupt (13) Because he possesses wealth and (numerous) sons. (14) When Our revelations are rehearsed unto him, he saith: fables of the ancients. (15) We will soon singe his pig-nose. (16) We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden who had sworn that in the morning they would reap it, (17) without saying, "If it be God's will." (18) Then a visitation from thy Lord visited it, while they were sleeping, (19) and so by morning the orchard lay as though it had been fully harvested. (20) As the morning broke, they called out, one to another,- (21) Saying: Run unto your field if ye would pluck (the fruit). (22) So they went off, saying one unto another in low tones: (23) Saying: No poor man shall enter it today upon you. (24) And they went out betimes determined in purpose. (25) But when they saw the (garden), they said: "Verily, we have gone astray," (26) (Then they said): "Nay! Indeed we are deprived of (the fruits)!" (27) The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?' " (28) They answered: "Limitless in His glory is our Sustainer! Verily, we were doing wrong!" (29) Then they turned to each other reproaching. (30) They said: "Alas for us! We have indeed transgressed! (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than it in exchange. To our Lord we humbly turn' (32) Such was their punishment, [in this life]. But the punishment of the life to come is much more severe, if only they knew it! (33)
