The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and by what you write, (1) (Muhammad), you are not insane, thanks to the bounty of your Lord. (2) And verily, thine shall be a reward neverending (3) for, behold, thou keepest indeed to a sublime way of life; (4) and [one day] thou shalt see, and they [who now deride thee] shall see, (5) #NAME? (6) Indeed, your Lord knows very well those who strayed from His Path, and those who are guided. (7) So do not yield to the rejecters. (8) Fain would they that thou shouldst be pliant, so that they will be pliant. (9) Do not yield to one persistent in swearing, (10) [And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip - (11) Hinderer of the good, transgressor, sinful, (12) the crude of low character (13) (who so acts) simply because he has wealth and sons, (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “These are stories of earlier people.” (15) Soon We will brand him on the nose. (16) Verily, We have tried them as We tried the people of the garden, when they swore to pluck the fruits of the (garden) in the morning, (17) And they did not say, “If Allah wills”. (18) Then there came on the (garden) a visitation from thy Lord, (which swept away) all around, while they were asleep. (19) So by the morning it seemed as though picked clean. (20) In the morning they called to one another, (21) Saying: Run unto your field if ye would pluck (the fruit). (22) So they went off speaking to each other in a low voice. (23) "Let not a single indigent person break in upon you into the (garden) this day." (24) And they opened the morning, strong in an (unjust) resolve. (25) But when they saw it, they said: Lo! we are in error! (26) Indeed, we are utterly ruined!" (27) The best among them said: Said I not unto you: Why glorify ye not (Allah)? (28) They answered: "Limitless in His glory is our Sustainer! Verily, we were doing wrong!" (29) Then they began to reproach one another. (30) They said: woe unto us! verily we! we have been arrogant. (31) Maybe our Lord will give us better than this. We turn to our Lord in supplication." (32) Such is the Punishment (in this life); but greater is the Punishment in the Hereafter,- if only they knew! (33)
